We're... back?
Oh gosh, shows are SERIOUSLY BACK. I was on the fence about resurrecting this, but the shows just keep coming and this is a very easy way to share what's going on, so here I am.
Is it weird to be contemplating shows again? Yes. Am I looking forward to dancing at shows again? Hell yes.
Here's what's up for the next few months. I'll probably pop back into your inboxes in a month or so!
Where I’ll Be
Sat 7/31 — Jacques Greene at a Secret Warehouse Location
My second-to-last pre-pandemic show was seeing Jacques Greene play an incredible set at Starline Social Club. Excited to see him again.
Fri 8/13 — SNBRN at 1015 Folsom
Got pretty into him during the pandemic, with some help from Jess and some fun Twitch DJ sets too. Missed him at the mint pre-pandemic, so rectifying that now.
Sat 8/21 — Sébastien Léger and Verlk at Audio
Verlk has been playing solid sets for awhile, and Sebastien Leger played an excellent Cercle set, so I figured this was worth it.
Fri 9/17 — Luttrell at 1015 Folsom
Rescheduled from last year, this will hopefully be a great show. Won't be the same as seeing him outside on Treasure Island, however.
Sat 9/18 — Nora En Pure, Spencer Brown, Cassian, Marsh and others at Day to Night Festival Treasure Island
Rescheduled from last year, should be a great festival experience hanging out on the great lawn on treasure island. Bring a mask for the dust though, probably...
Fri 10/22 — Franc Moody at 1015 Folsom
They played an epic and incredible show at Rickshaw Stop last year. Very excited to see them again with hopefully some more space to dance.
Conflicts and considerations
July
Fri 7/2 — Dosem at Audio
Anjunadeep crew, activate. Should be a good show, but not compelling enough for me to totally deactivate my pandemic hibernation. It's a process.
Sat 7/10 — Ben UFO at Public Works
The hype train is long with this one.
Sat 7/10 — Durante at Audio
He puts on a good chill show.
Fri 7/30 — Maya Jane Coles at 1015 Folsom
I skipped seeing her the last time I had tickets to see her and heard she played an excellent show. But I am not up for b2b nights this soon.
August
Sat 8/7 — Anthony Attalla at Audio
Saw him at the Toolroom SF Mint party, and he was excellent and fun.
Sun 8/8 — The Knocks at the Phoenix Hotel
Pool party with the Knocks is almost more fun than a boat party with the Knocks. They put on an excellent show, but I don't need to see them again.
Fri 8/20 — J. Worra at Audio
She has some really fun tracks, I got into her during the pandemic as well.
Sun 8/22 — Will Clarke at the Phoenix Hotel
Pool party with Will Clarke very nearly hops over my post-pandemic impulse bar, but not quite.
Fri 8/27 — Snakehips and Party Pupils at 1015 Folsom
What can I say, 1015 is back to killer bookings. These both fall a bit into partyboi house, as I like to call it, but Party Pupils has really incredible mashups.
Sun 8/29 — Washed Out at the Phoenix Hotel
If I wanted to complete my pre-pandemic shows with "post-pandemic" bookends, I'd go to this one. The pool party events are always fun.
September
Fri 9/3 — Amtrac and Durante at Great Northern
Amtrac is one of my favorite artists, Durante is also excellent, and he's playing live. If I wasn't out of town I would jump on this.
Fri 9/3 — TSHA at Audio
I accidentally spent all day yesterday listening to TSHA. If not for the ranked list of conflicts, I'd be at this show lol.
Sat 9/4 — CRi at Audio
His album was really good, I kept listening to it. Alas, I'm gone.
Sun 9/5 — Yotto at the SF Mint
The show I went to at the SF Mint was really fun, surprisingly enjoyable venue for a day party. Plenty of people watching at a day party too!
Fri 9/10 — Rinzen at Audio
There are some excellent Rinzen tracks out there, but not enough to clear my higher post-pandemic impulse buy bar.
Fri 9/17 — Spencer Brown at Audio
Day to Night Festival pre-party featuring Spencer Brown. I'm at another show but this one should be a good time.
Sat 9/25 — Fisher, Blond:ish, Vintage Culture, Felix Da Housecat at Lake Merritt Plaza
Hella good lineup for this block party. Tempted.
Sat 9/25 — Goldroom Boat Party
Disappointed by the lineup this time, I haven't heard of any of the artists. But the past few years this has been a super fun time.
Just Announced
Wed 10/13 — Men I Trust at GAMH
Fri 10/15 — ford. at Rickshaw Stop
Mon 11/15 & Tues 11/16 — Beach Fossils + Wild Nothing at GAMH
Mon 12/13 — Roosevelt at Public Works
Other notes
Recent releases
TSHA has a new single, OnlyL, that was good enough to lead me to spend the rest of my day listening to her discography and song radio.
This Honey Dijon remix is a total party.
Cautious Clay has a new album out, same vibe as the older stuff he's put out, but not much of note.
Polo y Pan is about the same…maybe it will grow on me.
There's a new SAULT album out, haven't had a chance to listen yet but I'm looking forward to it.
I got into a music rut when I discovered Jim E-Stack and just listened to this album and related tracks for several days. Does anyone else end up just listening to random playlists in the middle of the week most of the time? I feel like I've been floundering for music focus a lot of the time, which maybe makes it so easy to dive deep into a particular artist's discography.
Read Moir Music
It's been a bit since I had the time to focus on reading something more in-depth, so while I attempt to catch up on a number of academic papers about music streaming, I made time to listen to this podcast with Christine Osazuwa about measuring music. My favorite things, music and data!
More next time. If you want, send me what you've been listening to or reading lately!
