See Moir Music: Half July
I'm sending this today instead of at 2am last night which was also today
Where I’ll Be
If I’m watching some music live, I’ll be on Twitch:
Usually making it to at least one of RAC’s M/W/F 6PM streams on his Twitch channel.
Considering tuning into LP Giobbi’s streams at 10:30AM but probably missing it anyway because I’m barely functional before noon these days.
Saturdays & some Sundays at Abracadabra on Twitch (unless there’s a competing festival or life).
Just Announced
Nothing that I’ve heard of for this upcoming weekend yet…
Fri July 24 @ 12PM — Rave the Vote on lostresorttv on Twitch, combining voter registration with DJs, two of my favorite things. It will continue for monthly Fridays until November, so look forward to future August 14, September 11, and October 2 editions. July promises Seth Troxler, The Black Madonna, Ash Lauryn, Deon Cole, Yaeji and more.
Livestream highlights
Still tuning into my quaranstreams playlist on YouTube every so often, but I’ve been mostly tuning into DJ sets on Twitch. SURPRISING NO ONE I did not manage to attend the music festival inside of Minecraft, despite the incredible lineup.
Blond:ish has been doing Saturday and Sunday streams on her Abracadabra record label Twitch channel, but time zones are hard (she plays at 6PM EST).
Last week I meant to tune in and catch her set and caught Gab Rhome instead because I forgot she was in EST. It was still worth tuning in for.
This past weekend I accepted that I would miss her set but still tuned in and caught Da Mike this time and WOW was he good. I’ve mentioned before that I’ve fallen into an afrohouse fandom during this shelter in place time, and he collaborates with the major South African DJs I’ve been digging into, as well as the Keinemusik record label crew too. Great all around. Keeping an eye on his Instagram so I can catch his next set hopefully.
Spring Awakening did a virtual festival a couple weeks ago that I neglected to mention here. Sorry about that. My favorite sets that I caught:
Goldroom played an excellent set there (1 hr, YouTube)
SNBRN also played an incredible set. I’d never listened to him before and I was entranced and instantly became a fan (I should always trust you, Jess). (1 hr, YouTube)
Thanks to Goldroom I discovered another festival that I also neglected to tell y’all about (life is hard, you get it), Retrospekt Festival, featuring all LA-based DJs. Fave sets will hopefully be posted online by the artists in the next few weeks. I’ll update the webpage version of this if it happens:
The Knocks played a fun set as always (1 hr, Twitch)
J. Worra has been a consistently fun DJ playing great sets and I’ve started to seek her out after discovering her this past month at another festival stream somewhere… (1 hr, Twitch)
Goldroom played a really fun set again too. Really miss his boat parties. (1 hr, Twitch)
DJ Lala showed up for half an hour and played dancehall and cumbia and I was DELIGHTED. Keeping an eye out for more of her too. (30 mins, Twitch)
LP Giobbi was not anyone I’d ever heard of but WOW her set was EXCELLENT. She just released a single with Little Boots and dropped it during her set, so good. (1 hr, Twitch)
Stayed up late for Sacha Robotti’s set too, he played so many unreleased tracks, including a remix of Peaches - Fuck the Pain Away which he’s trying to get cleared now. Fingers crossed. (1 hr, Twitch)
Other notes
Recent great releases
Da Mike put out a Kaavan EP and he dropped Kaavan during his set that I caught.
Goldroom released a single, Guess I’m Jaded and it’s great. Eagerly awaiting the remixes.
Hayden James put out a somewhat short DJ mix album, Hayden James Presents Waves of Gold but it’s still a delight.
Keita Sano almost snuck out an entire album without me noticing, but I found it. Pianseq is only 6 songs, and I still need to listen to it more, but I like gym.
Idris Elba and the Knocks put out a single with Tiggs Da Author called One Fine Day and it’s one fine song (low hanging fruit joke).
Sun-El Musician (who I discovered when I watched the rest of the Africa is Not a Jungle sets on the Gongbox YouTube channel over July 4th weekend) has a new single, Ubomi Abumanga and it’s so good.
This Howling album is slowly trickling out, and I can’t wait. I preordered it on Bandcamp. SOON.
As mentioned before, LP Giobbi put out a single called Meet Again, with Little Boots. It’s so good.
Also thanks to Spotify I discovered an artist called Super Flu (heh) and their Jetendra EP is very nice.
Shazamming while Dancing
Still keeping my quarandjed playlist updated with my favorites from all the live and recorded streams I’ve been watching. Takeaways of shelter-in-place DJ sets so far are: I guess I like tech house a LOT, am starting to like techno more (kinda), acid house is okay but usually only when Sacha is playing it, and if you need me I’ll be listening to afrohouse and dancehall for the next 6 months too.
Favorite tracks from the past couple weeks:
Read Moir Music
No real reading suggestions this week as it pertains to music. Keep on about justice for Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, and pay attention to your local politics—what policies in your city, county, and state have an outsize effect on already-marginalized communities? And what politicians and organizations are voting against those policies and working to dismantle them?
It’s also disability pride month, and if you haven’t read this Twitter thread about how disabled folks are legally prevented from saving money in many cases, well, now you know. Channel the rage into practicing allyship, advocacy, and voting, and donating. Or make those all ors, depending on how much energy you have these days. Do what you can.
