See Moir Music: Early May
A third month of no live events continues
Where I’ll Be
Noodling on tracks I’m pretending to produce on Ableton Live (I just want to put spoken word samples into everything, other people can make the music, I just want to find fun samples!) and playing around with Traktor DJ 2 software. There’s also a petition to help out independent venues, you can find that here: http://saveourstages.com
Just Announced
Trying to keep my nose to the ground, wait, ears to the grindstone, wait no, hmmm. Well, I’ll tell you about anything I discover in the livestreaming music realm that also interests me personally. There is a heavy bias to this newsletter.
Special Events
Fri, May 15 @ 2PM – Sat May 16 @ 2PM — SET, a local SF promoter, is having a 24 hour virtual festival featuring Blond:ish, David Hohme, Enamour, Fehrplay, Jeremy Olander, Jody Wisternoff, John Monkman, Simon Doty, Verlk, and more names I didn’t recognize. So much deep house. So much. Catch it on Twitch.
Fri, May 15 @ 5PM – 2AM – Sun, May 17 @ 5PM – 2AM — EDC goes virtual with Benny Benassi, Boombox Cartel, Claude VonStroke, David Guetta, Dombresky, Don Diablo, Duke Dumont, Flosstradamus, Headhunterz, Kaskade, Nicole Moudaber, Oliver Heldens, Seven Lions, TOKiMONSTA, Wax Motif, Whethan, Zeds Dead, Zhu and others. Presumably it will be on Twitch, and maybe also YouTube.
Noise Pop is doing “No Place Like Home” events every Tuesday and Thursday, benefitting different local venues each time.
Tue @ 7PM — Geographer benefitting Rickshaw Stop (Facebook Event)
Thu @ 7PM — Built to Spill benefitting Slim’s/GAMH (Facebook Event)
Sat May 23 – Mon May 25 — Movement @ Home. Lineup TBA but stay tuned! I was supposed to be there in real life. It’s currently rescheduled for September so we’ll see what happens with that.
Music Most of the Time
These are the ones I attempt to listen to.
Diplo and friends and labelmates on Mad Decent Live on Twitch with music most evenings. Really tho, it’s all about Lazer Sunday.
Boiler Room has been doing streams from isolation.
The Anjuna Twitch channel is hosting occasional streams at awkward-for-the-US times but the replays still exist. They started workout streams this week...
Artist Streams
Other artists are consistently streaming live on their own channels on YouTube/Twitch/Instagram:
Calvin Harris as Love Regenerator (come back to us, Calvin)
Black Coffee on Gongbox. This coming Saturday’s set is his last one.
Livestream highlights
That you can rewatch:
Hayden James’ set from Chill Nation is finally posted on YouTube. I liked it so much the first time I watched it again. (1 hr, YouTube)
Polo y Pan posted a Home Sweet Home mixtape which was enjoyable. (45 mins, YouTube)
A-Trak at Defected Virtual Festival 5.0 (1 hr, YouTube)
Duke Dumont at Defected Virtual Festival (1 hr, YouTube)
Sonny Fodera at Defected Virtual Festival (1 hr, YouTube)
These ones were also good but :
Tuesday K.Flay had a short livestream on her instagram for Noise Pop and Bottom of the Hill. One of those emergency “oh no nothing is working” moments where the planned streaming sites didn’t work out. Bummed I forgot to catch Rogue Wave on Thursday night.
Robyn played a fun set at her Club Domo set on Friday as well, track list is on her Instagram.
Tinlicker’s stream on Saturday was really nice. Lots of good tunes and they played for 3 full hours! Tracklist on 1001Tracklists.
Black Coffee’s Home Brewed 005 was pretty good, I tracked down a bootleg. His Home Brewed 006 set was excellent, and the chat was keen to let us know that he has an album coming in fall 2020, but some other South African DJ/producers, Black Motion, Da Capo, and Chymamusique are also coming out with albums soon.
Looking forward to checking out
A-Trak did a French House set (2 hrs, YouTube)
MK did a live set for Mixmag (1 hr, Facebook Live)
Digitalism played a Home Zone radio show (2 hrs, Facebook Live)
Claptone played at Defected Virtual Festival 5.0 (1 hr, YouTube)
Soulmajestik played at Defected Virtual Festival 5.0 (1 hr, YouTube)
Whethan played for another Intermission Broadcast (1 hr, YouTube)
OFFIAH played at Defected Virtual Festival 5.0 (1 hr, YouTube)
Max Cooper played a Lockdown AV Session (1 hr, YouTube)
Sonny Fodera played a livestream from his studio (1.5 hrs, YouTube)
Folamour played a Boiler Room set (1 hr, YouTube)
Other notes

A new track by Joe Goddard, one from Rhye, and another from Astronautalis.
Tourist has a new EP out, reworks of tracks from his last album Wild.

Shazamming while Dancing
Still keeping my quarandjed playlist updated with my favorites from all the live and recorded streams I’ve been watching. This I am very consistent about!

Still working on data analysis of my listening habits, including reconstructing a daily record of every livestream I’ve watched in the past two months. So far I haven’t noticed that much of an increase in listening behavior, and without having preexisting data for an extended time working from home, it’s hard to say if this is unique to the conditions, with frequent livestream festivals and DJ sets substituting for concerts, or if it’s only related to working from home primarily during the week. Also looking further into weekday vs weekend listening patterns, and currently analzying my artist discovery patterns to see if that’s increased since I started watching all sorts of livestreamed DJ sets by artists I haven’t listened to before.
