See Moir Music: Bye 2022

I almost typed 2020 sigh

Hello, we have reached the week where we all pretend the year is over, at least at work. I hope that you're not doing too much work for the next couple weeks. Bundle up, stay cozy, get reflective, and let's dance.

Where I’ll Be

I bolded all the shows I'm going to—I’m not going anywhere until the end of January and then it picks up quite a bit! Hoping that’s also long enough for the current and post-holiday COVID waves to die down as well.

I bought all these tickets (except for Channel Tres) while putting together this email so uh, we'll see how I feel next year but for now I'm p excited.

  • Sun 1/29 – Magia and Monkey Safari (Day Party!) at Audio

    • No idea who/what Magia is but I skipped Monkey Safari last time they were in town (despite having tickets) and regretted it a bit ever since. Hoping the odds for this one will be more in my favor…

February

  • Fri 2/3 – Hessle Audio (Ben UFO, Pangaea, Pearson Sound) at the Great Northern

Other fun events

  • Thu 1/12 – Internet for the People book talk with Ben Tarnoff hosted by the Internet Archive

    • "Tarnoff tells the story of the privatization that made the modern internet, and which set in motion the crises that consume it today." See you there?

  • Fri 1/20 – Public Domain Day hosted by the Internet Archive

    • Celebrating works from 1927 making it into the public domain, such as:
"books from authors like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Marcel Proust, and Virginia Woolf, silent film classics like the controversial The Jazz Singer with Al Jolson and Fritz Lang’s dystopian Metropolis, and snappy musical compositions like You Scream, I Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream."

  • Fri 2/17 – Isabel Wilkerson at Sydney Goldstein Theater

    • The author of the Warmth of Other Suns and Caste: The Origin of our Discontents is giving a talk as part of a series with City Arts and Lectures. Usually authors are interviewed, but unclear if that's happening here!

  • Now – 1/2/24 – Ragnar Kjartansson: The Visitors at SF MoMA

    • Perhaps the most entrancing and engrossing a/v art installation I've ever encountered. Highly, highly, highly recommend.

Other notes

Starline Social Club in Oakland appears to be closing again. I guess they weren't able to make their worker co-op (that was maybe a lie) work out longer term. Here's hoping the venue finds a new owner and continues on!

Recent great releases

Not a whole lot of new albums that I've noticed, but I've been trolling through a lot of new DJ sets on YouTube, namely the following:

  • Mall Grab for Boiler Room in Melbourne it's pure fire, gotta see him play next time.

  • salute for Boiler Room in Melbourne… eagerly anticipating any and all 2023 tour dates from salute.

  • Four Tet at the Lot Radio 12/1/22 peaceful and a jam.

  • Interplanetary Criminal for The Lab

  • Rewatching Fred Again..'s Boiler Room set and trying not to over-anticipate the time when the guy in the crowd bumps the deck and shuts off the sound

  • Also this live performance of Frightened Rabbit on KEXP from awhile back.

I'll be publishing my end-of-the-year music blog post next week sometime! I split it apart from my Spotify Wrapped breakdown post this year. What were your top live shows, artists, albums, and tracks of 2022? I want to know!
