See Moir Music: Almost March
I guess we're back on every 2 weeks
Shows are really and truly back and so am I with this newsletter, it seems! Jim-E Stack and Jacques Greene were pretty good, very glad I jumped on the chance to see them.
Caribou was possibly one of the best sets I've seen in the last few years. Definitely the best show I've been to since 2019. If you need me I’ll be listening to Our Love and Sun and trying to relive how those felt live. Will they be back in the fall at an outdoor venue? Only time will tell.
Where I’ll Be
Fri 3/11 – Franc Moody at 1015
Rescheduled after a long time. Should have major party vibes, and expecting it to be a bit wilder than the sure-to-still-be-great show at The Indy.
Fri 3/25 – Breakbot and Irfane at 1015 Folsom
You must go to this show. Their new single Remedy is GREAT, and also tickets are only $15. See you there.
Sat 3/26 – Bicep at The Warfield
Upgraded from Regency Ballroom. Saw Jon Hopkins here and it was epic so should still be a great experience, especially with the visuals they're likely to have. Excited.
Conflicts and considerations
Sat 2/26 – Karizma at Monarch
Got a ticket to this show based purely on his single Work it Out, which Jamie xx dropped when he played at OSL. Highly recommend. His track Nuffin Else is also excellent. I'm having to skip this show out of an abundance of COVID caution before I travel next weekend, but gosh it should be great.
Joy Orbison is one of those artists that I thought had been around for ages but instead just kinda stealth snuck into my awareness. Will hopefully be a chill night, and always awesome to support local DJs too. I'll sadly be out of town for this show now but it should be an amazing night.
Tue 3/8 – Geographer at the Indy
Always puts on a good show, but I've seen him enough.
Sat 3/12 – Dan Shake at Monarch
Disco brilliance at a really fun venue.
Sat 3/12 – A Club Called Rhonda at Great Northern
Sun 3/13 – Nora En Pure at Audio
Random to have a Sunday show, but this is guaranteed to be some great deep house.
Tue 3/15 – Joywave at The Indy
Fri 3/18 – CRi at Audio
I feel like he was just here? Either way, this should be an excellent set. I'll have to play it by ear.
Sat 3/19 – Party Pupils at Public Works
Sat 3/19 – Maceo Plex at The Midway
Sat 3/19 – Defected at Halcyon
Lineup TBA, but the Defected Records DJs are super good.
Fri 3/25 – We Were Promised Jetpacks at The Indy
Just announced / Coming up
Fri 4/1 – Snakehips BOAT PARTY
Tough to go wrong with a boat party. A nighttime boat party is tough though.
Thu 4/7 – J. Worra at 1015 Folsom
Fri 4/8 – LP Giobbi at Great Northern
She's been having a helluva rise since getting discovered by Sofi Tukker, and I enjoyed quite a lot of her Twitch streams. Should be a good show. She also runs a Femme House collective and will be hosting a workshop earlier in the day (it seems).
Sat 4/9 – Duck Sauce, Purple Disco Machine, Chromeo (DJ set), Justin Martin, Bruja, and more at The Midway
Hella stacked. Early bird is already sold out.
Sat 4/9 – Anthony Attalla at Audio
Toolroom DJ, put on a great set the one time I saw him, recommended.
Thu 4/14 – Fred Again.. at GAMH
IT'S HAPPENING Y'ALL. No I do not have the presale code. Yes I am very anxious about securing tickets to this show.
Sat 4/16 – Durante at Audio
He's here like, every 6 months it feels like. Still good tho.
Sat 4/16 – The Blessed Madonna BOAT PARTY
I love a good boat party. A nighttime boat party tho? Count me out.
Wed 4/20 – Sampa the Great at The Indy
Sampa the Great is great, and this show is very cheap. But I just realized this is a 4/20 show and that is sure to be an added vibe that I won't enjoy, but you might!
Thu 4/21 – Honey Dijon at 1015 Folsom
See you at this show? Pam talked me into it :)
Fri 4/22 – TEED at Public Works
My calendar this weekend is getting pretty booked up but this is a really tempting show since I missed him the last time he was in town…
Sat 4/23 – Fatboy Slim at The Midway
Sat 4/23 – Adam Port at The Midway
Fri 4/29 – Logic1000, Femmelectric, and Banksia at Audio
She's fantastic, and the local DJs supporting are also very excellent. Insta-purchased tickets to this show and I recommend you do the same.
May
Wed 5/4 – IAMX at The Chapel
Is this the same Iamx that has a few remixes that I adore? I have no idea.
Sun 5/8 – Classixx at The Midway
Sat 5/14 – Le Youth at Audio
Tue 5/17 – !!! at The Chapel
Thu 5/19 – Cut Copy at Fox Theater
June

Other notes
Gray Area has an Algorithmic Art Assembly event March 10-12, and it looks fantastic. I'll be out of town for most of it, but if you've ever wanted to make epic visuals for a performer, this Learn Shaders Through Livecoding looks very relevant, or if you want to programmatically generate music with the help of some software, check out the Live-Coding Music with TidalCycles workshop.
If you want to experience some sounds while exploring San Francisco, check out these soundscapes from local artists in local places: SoundwaveSF
Also, Resident Advisor is maintaining a list of resources about the Ukraine invasion by Russia.
Recent great releases
Hammer has a new single and it's pretty good:
Booka Shade has a new single (double???) out:
TSHA is putting out a fabric presents… mix soon, and her song BOYZ is off of that:
Max Cooper keeps putting out songs here and there, good tunes for pensive days:
Shazamming while Dancing
I have been remiss and never put together a playlist of what Jacques Greene played, nor Jim-E Stack's set from 1015 Folsom. I have, however, been listening to a lot more Soundcloud than usual. Probably my favorite discovery is this track, Nterini edit by tourdefrance:
Another fun discovery is a Fred Again.. remix of a Christine and the Queens track:
If you're in the mood for something longer, this set was nice:
