Turkish Airlines is also accelerating this shift by moving its Sydney–Istanbul connection away from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore starting in October, which will further concentrate Australia–Southeast Asia traffic patterns around alternate hubs.

What Happens Next

AirAsia X will refocus its Australia operations on Melbourne and Perth. From December, Melbourne will receive daily services from the airline, while Perth will gain 35 weekly flights to Denpasar. These additions represent AirAsia's bet that secondary Australian cities offer better load factors and revenue potential than the crowded Sydney corridor, where established carriers already maintain strong presence.
