Scorpio Season Mix: séverine
I first really became aware of séverine last spring, and I'm probably not alone in that regard: their 'Look How Hard I'm Into You' blend twisting together Barker and Ariana Grande was immediately recognised for its gorgeousness, and soon it was everywhere. It still is everywhere actually, appearing in several Essential Mixes at this point. séverine is Christiane Øyen, a DJ, blend specialist and producer based in LA. She's founder of Xtended Release, a collective/label/platform whose manifesto is expressly progressively political; the group released a compilation in 2020 to support poor and unhoused tenants in their locality. Also, séverine co-runs the deejayaffirmations meme page. This is something I love about their approach as well as their mixes: dance is freeing and fun and beautiful and political all at once, just as their music combines hard techno and pop, consistently swerving and veering between extremes. You can read Scorpio traits into that if you like: determination, confrontation, but also an amazing, transformative capacity to make magic, to will miracles. We're honoured to have her share a mix with us this season, and blown away by the madness they've done within — stompin' clubby warpers, eyes-down garage, propulsive trance and hardness, breaks and Janet. A voice for Scorpio Season
Feeling powerful. Feeling vengeful. Feeling resentful. Remembering all the reasons why, all the things that were, all the things that weren't. No quarter shall be given, and I will appear to be scintillatingly hot while refusing to relinquish myself of the aforementioned quarters, which, as I say, shall not be given. Chaos follows in my wake; I lead it, but I don't care that I do. I am simply compelled to do what I do. That's power. Covid is a Scorpio. So is David Guetta. Madonna informed him directly over business lunch that she wouldn't work with him, just because he is. Coward.
If you're a Scorpio, a dear child of my domain, you're better off for it. And if you're resentful of that, you can blame your parents for fucking on Valentine's Day.
I'm not all bad, but I sure spend a lot of time having to remind people of that. It's here, deep into the year, that people come to me because the other signs in the calendar have let them down. They come to me – I don't go to them. It might be a rough ride, but you'll get your life alongside me, and I'll celebrate you for that. Don't let either of us down – it can't be forgiven and I swear I'll pursue you to the end of the Zodiac for that. Feeling brave. Feeling passionate. Let's get married. Let's make a blood oath.
