Slow News - Happy Birthday, America, I guess

Give us your email and you'll hear from us once a month (at most!) with musings on life in the shop, invitation to rides, and pictures we think you'll like.

Heya Jay here.

While a bunch of the country lines up behind the dumb flag (this would be a good place for a raspberry emoji if only there was one), we're going to do what we do best: open the doors, feed people, play good music loud and fix some bikes.

We'll be open all day on July 4th, serving free vegan & heartless American hot dogs to anyone who wanders in. Homemade vegan chili on hand for chili dogs (I do maintain Chicago-style is the best hot dog so we'll have those fixin's too) Nothing else, really, just a hot dog and a place to be.

On the soundtrack: Marisa Anderson's The Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music. It's a pointed flip of Harry Smith's famous 1952 folk anthology. Anderson set herself one rule - collect folk music only from the places the United States has been at war with in her lifetime, from 1970 onward: Southeast Asia, the USSR, the Arab and Islamic world. She pulled roughly 900 songs from Harry Smith's private archive, rebuilt the liner notes by hand, and wrestled with every translation. Her question: "Who are the people we've been told are 'unamerican'. And what have we lost in the fallout from that label?"

We'll be here feeding everybody and playing the music of the people we were taught to call the enemy. Send us your favorite music from your favorite shithole country and we'll play it all day.

Night Moves

Night Moves: HARD MODE, Thursday, July 23

July's got a fifth Thursday hiding in it, and we're using it for something special: our mellow beach-and-cookies Night Moves gets a big sibling. A big ride up and over the Marin Headlands, out where the whole city glitters back at you. There will be snacks (this is a Scenic Routes ride after all).

Night Moves - Hard Mode on Ride with GPS

This is a real no-drop ride. Nobody gets left behind. We regroup at the top of every climb and we all finish together (so if you're in a hurry, join another ride, Ornot - jokes jokes. We love Ornot but those folks are FAST). Come as you are and the hills are optional to love but mandatory to climb, and we'll climb them right alongside you. Bring some lights.

Calendar

  • Thu, July 2 - Flat Fix Class. For beginners, for amateurs, for people that just like to hang out.
  • Thu, July 9 - Night Moves. Cookies, tea, and the beach.
  • Thu, July 16 - Route Mapping with Ride with GPS. This month's rotating mechanics class. Join from your underpants over Zoom, or in person - bring a laptop to the shop (we'll have a few computers too).
  • Sun July 26th - Day Grooves (amd the last Sunday of every month) - for the girls, gays and theys. A chatty social ride with hooting, hollering and whooping. Allies welcome but keep it down.
  • Thu, July 30 - Community Night. The whole crew, no agenda.

Other Stuff:

  • Joel and Nishad and Michael and I are all going to the new Rose's Pizzeria on Clement tonight. Ask us how it was.
  • Mary and I are trying to go to at least one movie a month at the Balboa or 4 Star. I'm shooting for Gozilla Minus One on July 18th. Who's in?

One more thing is a book for borrowing

Finished Maintenance of Everything from last month's newsletter. It's kicking around the shop and available to borrow. Heads up: Bill's got first dibs. After that, it's fair game. Come flip through it.

See you at the shop.
