Just pulling together some threads, in three blocks:

Views on animal migration
A recent dispatch from Jer Thorp’s upstream//data on the Brooklyn Christmas Bird Count. A story about the International Cooperation for Animal Research Using Space (ICARUS) project to understand long-distance animal movement patterns. In Kristin L. Hoganson’s The Heartland (previously discussed here, excerpted on Lit Hub), the section about flyover/flownover as an alternative lens to think about ecological connections between “isolated” cultural regions.

So I was listening to a podcast (about food media)…
Gastropod and Reply All’s Sruthi Pinnamaneni taking a critical look at historical and contemporary food media and its relationship to race and gender: Who is given a platform to talk about food? And what food are they allowed to be an “authority” on? (Relatedly, since last summer I’ve been feeling uneasy about my Lucky Peach section of the bookshelf in a way I was completely ignorant about back in its heyday.)

Locally sourced music
It was Bandcamp Friday. Some local picks (with thanks to WKSU): Bridgeport R&B from Clemont. “Ukulele punk” Cleveland outfit The Sonder Bombs. Easy-going Dover indie from Coby and the Prisoners. Cleveland hip-hop group Muamin Collective. Vibraphone-forward atmospheric jazz from Akron’s Lemon Quartet.
