Some news: A story sale, a workshop acceptance

First things first: thank you to everyone who reached out after my last newsletter and expressed sympathy or shared their own stories about similar situations.

Second things second: I’m going to try to update this newsletter more frequently, both with author stuff and some general life stuff. Nothing can ever replace the LiveJournal of yesteryear, but I miss having a slow, long-form conversation with people online. It probably doesn’t need to be said, but part of being a working author is having a strong online presence, so I think I’ll stick here for awhile. Expect to get an email from me once a month or so, maybe more often if I have any big news.

Next things next: I have two pieces of news to share today.

  1. I’ve sold a short story to Analog Magazine. THE ONLY GOD IS US is a travelogue about cancer, death, runaway climate engineering technology, and a geriatric camper van. Believe it or not, it has a happy ending. Pub date TBD, but I’ll be making more noise about it as it approaches.

To be honest, I’m pretty smug about this. Analog is a prestigious and well-known publication and this is a big feather in my cap.

  2. I’ve been accepted to the Wayward Wormhole novel workshop this November. I’m so excited to see a new place (I’ve never been to New Mexico!), meet some new friends, and get critique from some of the greats—Charlie Finlay, Donald Maas, and Cat Rambo. I’ll be bringing a working-titled novel that I’m not saying anything about yet because it’s a big gross mess… but hopefully the workshop will fix it. And fix everything else that’s wrong with my writing. And fix me, generally.

Okay, that’s it. Short and sweet-ish. On the life front, I’m currently completely underwater finishing the aforementioned novel, prepping for my annual summer job, celebrating both my parents’ birthdays, and racing between the Bay Area and SoCal to spend a bunch of time with a certain sheep farmer. And working the day job at the startup. And moving my best friend into the spare room in my apartment. And going to therapy. So much therapy.
