Holiday potholder orders need to be in by September 15th!
Did you know that my holiday season starts in the summer? My fellow crafters are nodding their heads right now.
I make potholders one at a time. No AI, no mass production, just me and my sewing machine. (Sometimes my Mom helps out – thanks, Mom!) That takes time! If you’re planning to give potholders as gifts this holiday season, or if you just want some for yourself, please order them as soon as you are able. After you place your order, I will update you as I finish and ship them.
After September 15th, I will do my best, but cannot guarantee potholder delivery by the end of the year.

What: A market event featuring all handmade and hand-designed art to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Nine Banded Crafts in Oklahoma City

Celebrating Iconic Women
The Inner Worlds of Black Quilters
From the Hyperallergic blog: Author Sharbreon Plummer takes a trip through personal and cultural memory to celebrate the quilts of Black women in America. Check out her book, Stories in the Seams: A People’s History of Black Quilts and Their Makers.

Mellon Foundation grants $1.15M to preserve historic Freedom Quilting Bee site in Alabama
ALBERTA, Ala — Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy has received a $1.15 million grant from the Mellon Foundation to preserve the historic home of the Freedom Quilting Bee and build the organization’s long-term capacity, the group announced.
The Freedom Quilting Bee Cooperative was established in Alberta, Alabama, by Civil Rights activists Francis X. Walter and Estelle Witherspoon in 1966. Today, its manufacturing building in Alberta, Alabama is stewarded by FQBL and serves as a museum providing educational programming.
I hope this grant helps the Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy inspire generations to come!
Documentary: Frida Kahlo (2020, directed by Ali Ray)
I got to see a great documentary on the life and art of Frida Kahlo. You’re probably familiar with the high points of Kahlo’s famously turbulent life, and director Ali Ray certainly includes those in the story. However, this is the first work about Kahlo I’ve seen that has really detailed analysis of her paintings. Her technique, the materials she used, thoughtful commentary about her imagery. If you’re an art nerd like me you’ll enjoy this immensely.
Where to watch it: Frida Kahlo (2020) is free to watch on Kanopy, which you can access through your public library!
A Video For Those Who Read This Far
What if Frida Kahlo had a magical healing day at the spa?
Many of us turn to Kahlo’s body of work to process our own healing. What if we could give some of that healing back? ASMR collage artist Paper Pepper imagines it in this lovely video. (about 15 minutes)
