Tabletops, Part 1

I love tabletop gaming. Not so much in a Settlers of Catan kind of way, more in a Dungeons & Dragons kind of way. Or a Bananagrams kind of way.

In the sixth grade, my literature teacher created a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) for us to accompany the books we were reading (that I do not remember at all). A few rounds in, I felt very lost. It seemed like everyone else knew the rules of the game, but I didn’t really get it. Finally my friend Catherine turned to me and said, this is a role-playing game. You can do whatever you want. You have to imagine what your character would do next.

It was a lightbulb moment. In this game, I was allowed to be creative.

This is what I love about RPGs - it’s group storytelling. You all make up the story as you go along. And making things up as I go along is totally my jam. There are rules, of course, but the rules of an RPG form an armature in which the players create the story.

This is similar to any improvisational art form. You choose parameters and work within them. I do this in my daily life, too. I schedule things like housekeeping and grocery shopping to create a structure that protects my creative play. See how those ideas rhyme?

If you love TTRPG vibes but don’t have the resources or energy to play right now, here are some other ways to scratch that itch.

Y’all, watching this series on YouTube made me so happy. It’s a tabletop Dungeons & Dragons campaign with all-Desi players. And, if you’re like me, and only have a vague idea of what Desi means, here’s some more info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desi. I highly recommend this series, but be sure to have a hot cup of chai ready because if you don’t, the craving will be serious. Kolkata Chai makes awesome chai blends with no sugar.

Books on a shelf with two volumes prominently displayed: Legends & Lattes and Bookshops & Bonedust, both high fantasy novels by Travis Baldree.

Book: Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree

Epic fantasy adventure, but make it cozy. With lots of baked goods. I’ve already read this book twice this year. I also recommend the prequel, Bookshops & Bonedust.

Book: The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport by Samit Basu

At once futuristic and folkloric, this novel explores genie-in-a-bottle myths alongside mecha versus kaiju, royals versus commoners, off-world colonization versus climate resilience, and more. Cover illustration by Sparth.

Podcast: Red Dirt D&D

I haven’t listened to a lot of these pods but what I’ve heard, I’ve enjoyed.

Movie: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

The most accurate assessment of this movie I’ve heard is that you can hear the dice rolling. There’s plenty of fan service, and it’s for us. Currently available to stream on Amazon Prime. Watch the trailer on YouTube.

Stay tuned for the next issue of The Fold, where I’ll share more tabletop fun!

May all your rolls be natural 20s. Or at least jelly-filled.
