The Fold: Small Shops, Big Impact!

The Fold, a letter from artist Sarah Atlee

Hey friends.

How are we doing? Breathing? Good. Let’s keep that up.

I’m focusing on my work. This weekend I’ll be doing my ONLY in-person market event for 2024, so if you’re in the OKC area, I hope you can stop by and say hi!

Reminder: my signature scrappy potholders make great gifts! They’re built to last, and will stand up to any hot dish, plus your washer and dryer. You can get yours in person at the Earthglow Market (details above), DNA Galleries, or at my website.

You already know how important it is to Shop Small.

…But you may not know exactly how to go about that. I have some suggestions for you.

These businesses are all located in Oklahoma City, my home sweet home. But I want to hear about where you shop small in your community, too!

Awesome OKC Shops to Support

OKC's only secondhand art supply store. Here’s my personal take on why this shop matters.

The Floating Bookshop (Facebook page, Google Maps link)

My personal fave for buying books. They have an especially good selection of zines and graphic novels. And how cool is the idea of Plaid Friday?

Another excellent book joint.

But ordering books online is just more convenient for me.

I totally get it! You can go to Bookshop.org and choose an independent bookstore to receive proceeds from your purchase.

I've been working with these fine folks for years, and singing their praises for just as long. A guaranteed good spot for affordable art, including apparel and jewelry. Some of their stock can be purchased online, like the above print by Rachele Cromer.

Y’all, these folks are the real deal. Truly local food, and the best seasonal produce around. You can support multiple local businesses while shopping under this one roof.

Here’s their location in central OKC

And their other store in Edmond

This annual Fair Trade gift market is a gem. You’ll find ethically sourced gifts from all over planet Earth, and the proceeds go to the La’Angum Learning Center, a mother-tongue-based school in Ghana. You can read all about this marvelous school at PambeGhana.org.

The 2024 market is located at 7908 N Western in OKC. They’re open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 am - 6 pm, through December 24, 2024.

What are YOUR favorite locally owned businesses?

Let me know and I’ll share them in the next issue of The Fold! They could be in my neighborhood or yours – wherever that is in the world.

Until next time, remember to breathe.
