A Pep Talk and some New Things

A pep talk for artists, plus potholder-related news.

Photo of a page from Sarah's 2025 sketchbook. It's an expressive, scribbly drawing using crayon and other media.
Have you scribbled lately? It feels awesome.

Here’s a little pep talk for artists in these times.

In the face of atrocity, making art feels wrong. Beauty feels empty. Joy feels like we’re just looking the other way. Artists (me included) feel like giving up.

Here’s the thing: the people committing and covering up atrocity want us to give up. They want us to go numb. They want to drain our joy. That’s why we’re going to continue making things.

Creating things is something AI can not do. It’s something capitalism doesn’t want us to do. Creating connects us to our shared humanity. Creating keeps us human. Art is a pathway for survival and a conduit for change.

So let’s keep going.

Stuff I’ve Been Making

Photo of Sarah's quilted potholders in progress. There are 3 overlapping stacks of squares composed of fabric scraps in every color.

My studio is currently in potholder production mode. What does this mean for you? Right now, you can purchase potholder sets from me and get them very soon (without the typical wait time).

Click here to purchase potholders through my website.

I’m making my traditional potholders out of scrap fabric, and also something special I’ve never made before…

Introducing: Album Potholders for Bonus Track!

Photo of a pair of finished quilted potholders. The design is Sarah's interpretation of the cover of Nirvana's 1991 album, Nevermind.

Remember what it felt like to buy music and hold it in your hands? Did you pore over the album art, the liner notes, the photos of the band members? I grew up in the time of tape cassettes and cds, and to me they were sacred objects. I just don’t get the same thrill of looking at music on a screen.

I’m making a series of quilted potholders in tribute to the most iconic albums of the last six decades. These are available exclusively at Factory Obscura’s Bonus Track gift shop in Oklahoma City. I will not be making them for private commissions.

The Bonus Track gift shop is located inside Factory Obscura’s building in Midtown OKC.

Who/what is Factory Obscura? Factory Obscura is an Oklahoma City-based collaborative company creating immersive experiences that awaken wonder, build community, and make the world better. Click here to learn more.

Can I buy Album Potholders online? You can shop from a limited inventory at Bonus Track’s online store, but I don’t yet know if you’ll be able to buy Album Potholders that way. I’ll keep you posted.

Will you make potholders based on my favorite album? Your album suggestions are more than welcome, but the Album Potholders are only available for purchase at Bonus Track.

Coming Soon: My work in Entrails Magazine!

Cover art for Entrails Magazine, issue 2. The image is of an abstracted feminine figure, melting into a background of painted flower petals.

I’m going to have work published in Issue #2 of Entrails Magazine, a zine created by and for people with inflammatory bowel disease (hi, that’s me!).

When I read the first issue of Entrails, I felt seen. I was so validated by other peoples’ experiences and their ability to turn that into art. When the call came out for submissions to issue 2, I jumped at the chance to share my work.

Click here to order issues of Entrails Magazine.

Your order of Entrails #2 helps get this zine into the world. It helps creators like me feel encouragement from other people living with chronic illness. Please pass this on to your neighborhood book store, zine seller, etc. as well!

A GIF For Those Who Read This Far

Anyway, here are two capybaras getting a shower.

Stay hydrated,
xoxo Sarah
