arts letter: mid-october

2026-10-15

Hi there,

Thank you for joining my newsletter! I am grateful to anyone who wants to stay updated with my art even into the wild land of email…

In addition to art, I have some thoughts written out at the end of this newsletter.

I decided to continue through buttondown instead of substack (what you used to subscribe initially). Hopefully the formatting works, if not then let me know.

Here’s a look at some of the art I finished the past few weeks. 🍀

yaouri updates

I’m slowly working on that yaouri zine! (gehrlaurence, 18+) It’ll likely be done next year.

I love comics. The possibilities feel so infinite, limited only by the time you have to draw them… this one's a bit of a crazy composition...

figure drawings

with zeet studio sketch (aerial)

I recommend the zeet studio sketch sessions for anyone to make a meaningful improvement on their drawing skills, since the timing of each pose is well-structured for visual storytellers… (if you can, you should finish the whole session in one go!) Two years ago, they were what made a big difference in my draftsmanship skills. Even if you don’t care about the franchise the models are cosplaying, costumed figure drawing is great practice.

life drawing sample from 2024 (for comparison)

I wanted to compare these recent figure drawings with old ones.

I don’t think I’ve improved a significant amount in pure drawing skills in the past two years. My draftsmanship is especially not great this year… I’ve spent a lot of time working, & experimenting with various mediums instead. Drawing is like a muscle that you need to keep in shape. Fortunately though, that’s not the whole picture in art.

Looking closely, although my technical skills may have stayed around the same, my lines are more decisive and less floaty. Maybe what I want to convey has become more defined...

Rather than hoping for more time to draw, I’m trying to reprioritize to make the time, and hopefully that will reflect in my work!
