Back (with a book)

An update!

Well, clearly I took a long hiatus from this. I have a lot of reasons, but most of them feel inconsequential in the face of the last two years, and how I feel about the world now. I can tell you one of the things that I have been busy with: our work-in-progress of many years finally got published! Society Girl — A Tale of Sex, Lies, and Scandal, is a true crime investigation of a story that shook Pakistan in 1970; the mysterious death of a poet and former civil servant, and the woman entangled in his death.

On an October morning in 1970, phones began ringing all over Karachi. The charismatic young poet and former civil servant Mustafa Zaidi had been found dead in his bedroom. He wasn’t alone: Shahnaz Gul, a stunningly beautiful, married socialite, with whom Zaidi had been having an affair, was lying unconscious in the next room, seemingly drugged.

The ensuing scandal would shake Pakistani society, becoming a fixture on the front pages of newspapers even as the country went from one cataclysmic event to another. It grew to include obsession, revenge porn, the involvement of influential politicians and businessmen, and even a smuggling ring.

But two autopsies, several investigations, and one trial later – no one was able to answer what exactly happened in that bedroom, and how Mustafa Zaidi ended up dead.

Over fifty years later, authors Saba Imtiaz and Tooba Masood-Khan attempt to answer this question in Society Girl. Their retelling of, and years-long investigation into this story of twisted motives and murderous intentions, of it-girls and playboys, of class and culture, and a press out for blood and salaciousness, led to a far more complex tale than anyone could have possibly imagined.

Society Girl is published by Roli Books in India, and by Liberty Books in Pakistan, and is available at bookstores in India and Pakistan, and as a Kindle ebook. It’s been a journey and a half, and in November and December, Tooba and I did a little tour in Karachi and Lahore, which was also a journey and a half — you can see it all on Instagram.

I’m going to be publishing more regularly again, now that some of the (not so) valuable real estate in my head has been vacated. I’m working on something new, and I have far too many thoughts, and I have two more Inburgeren exams to study for, and it’s always lekker koud and never lekker warm these days. Hopefully the next time I post the sun will have made an appearance for more than five minutes. (It’s been a journey.)
