Against Scale

Friday night newsletter before a holiday weekend, yee-haw! 🤠 As I promised almost two months ago, here is the follow-up to my previous article, titled "Against Scale":

Against Scale | Runrig

A look at the way scalability perpetuates some of the worst tendencies of neoliberal capitalism, and how Runrig proposes to overturn those harmful dynamics through participatory design and transparent abstractions.

Truth be told, I started this way back in February intending it for an entirely different purpose, but I realized it was a lil' too 🌶️ (in the polemical sense) for that setting. I hope that's got you intrigued, because I'm pretty happy with it, but I also just want to get the darn thing off my plate. As I tease at the end of it, my next post will be something really juicy, I promise! And hopefully without as much delay. 🤞🏻

The aforesaid next article will focus on a key element of the Runrig Plan that I've put off detailing in full so far, something I'm calling Federated Municipal Platforms. If you read the very first draft proposal, it's what I referred to there as "many federated cooperative service platforms," a.k.a. Layer #2 in the crude vector image shaped like a birthday cake over on the home page. I'll get into the nuts-n-bolts of the architecture, so read "Against Scale" now because it lays the philosophical groundwork for those architectural choices.

That's it for now, but please do stay tuned!
