5 Golden Greats is two today!
Hi!
I was rudely reminded by a calendar reminder this morning that our first EP*, 5 Golden Greats, is two years old today.
So here’s five facts about each of the five songs on that EP.
Song 1: ‘Skeldergate’
1) According to Bartholomew’s City Guide to York, Skeldergate is ‘the saddest street in York’
2) When I wrote this song I lived a 30 minute walk from Skeldergate
3) I now live 5 minutes away from Skeldergate
4) The video for Skeldergate takes place on Skeldergate
5) In the video for Skeldergate, you briefly see an alleyway that Bart’s City Guide called ‘the most magical alley in York’
Song 2: ‘Stop Talking About Heaven‘
1) This song is based on a real conversation I heard on a train
2) The conversation was between a mother and daughter
3) The only thing I remember from that conversation was the mother saying ‘how many times do I have to tell you to stop talking about heaven‘
4) This is the only song on the EP not recorded in York, but instead in Amsterdam.
5) This is one of three songs we have that are about trains
Song 3: ‘Yesterday Never Comes‘
1) I was listening to a lot of Ernest Tubb when I wrote this song
2) The title, and main refrain, is based on Ernest Tubb’s ‘Tomorrow Never Comes‘
3) George Jones’ version of ‘Tomorrow Never Comes’ is perhaps the best one
4) This song was meant to be like a still-life painting - a lived-in place, without any humans.
5) After writing the song I discovered an Only Fools and Horses episode called ‘Yesterday Never Comes’ about a painting.
Song 4: ‘Mediaeval Song’
1) This is my Mediaeval Song
2) Apart from the version on this EP, we’ve also done a synth version, a jazz version and a hardcore version of this song
3) When we did the hardcore version of this song I started a pit, jumped in the pit, and ended up with a swollen lip
4) I never knew whether ‘Mediaeval’ was the correct spelling, but I just liked the way it looks
5) I think this song is about having to have a job
Song 5: ‘Damage Done is Damage Done’
1) I kind of hate the version of this song that’s on the EP
2) I know you’re meant to be positive about things or whatever but I really dislike this rendition
3) And that’s sad because its one of my favourite songs on the EP to play
4) Maybe I’ll record it again at some point
5) God I hate this recording
