77: Killer robot

Hello.

First of all, some advance warning; this will be the last daily newsletter for a while. I’m going to try weekly (every Friday) for the next few weeks, partly because I’ve got some holiday coming up and I need a rest and  I don’t want to stop doing this altogether. Putting this together every day has become a welcome habit, but I’ve wanted to try a weekly routine for a while. Let’s see how it goes. For now, here’s a bumper batch of links to keep you going until next Friday. Enjoy.

Charlie Stross: ‘SF, big ideas, ideology: what is to be done?’
“in the past 30 years the only truly challenging new concepts to come along were cyberpunk and the singularity … today you don’t need to read SF to get a sense of wonder high: you can just browse ‘New Scientist’. We’re living in the frickin’ 21st century. Killer robot drones are assassinating people in the hills of Afghanistan.”

“it’s just some NBC internet robot that scans YouTube videos and then compares the videos to the vast NBC library and just blocks the YouTube videos that match up, because the robot assumes the video has been stolen”

LSE: ‘Democracy is in danger as young people’s disenfranchisement accelerates’
“In 2021, 18-year olds will exercise less actual voting power than 79 year-olds. 50 year-olds will exercise 97 per cent more power than 18 year-olds…”

Quirky
Collaborative invention? I like this in theory. I initially only made it two minutes into the intro video before I had to stop it and throw up.
