A list of things I saw being carried on the back of a bike during a rogue afternoon in Rwanda

newsletter at rockym93 dot net

  • A truck tire
  • A bag of rice that was taller than me
  • A stack of firewood
  • A fully stocked shop display rack of what seemed to be scarves
  • A door
  • A mattress (rolled, I would guess double. King single at the very least. )
  • A sack of tea leaves.
  • A sack of potatoes that was not taller than me, but that did look heavier than me.
  • A bundle of sugar cane several metres tall, carried vertically.

(Folks, this country is mostly hills.)

  • Two pallets of soft drink.
  • Three huge vats of what I'm reliably told was milk tribute from government issue cows.
  • Four vertically stacked milk crates full of (presumably full) beer bottles.
  • Five (presumably empty) water jugs.
  • Six gas bottles (hopefully empty).
  • Approximately thirty pineapples.
  • (A reminder that this country is literally all hills.)
  • Two dudes with their milk tribute, holding on to the back of a truck as it went up aforementioned hills.

  • Never more than one personon a bike, though, cause that would be a crime. However, acceptable combinations did include:
  • A guy and his potatoes.
  • A woman under an open umbrella.
  • A guy and what appeared to be several weeks of laundry.
  • A guy and his shovel, taller than him, held vertically.
  • A guy and his saw blade, longer than him, held horizontally.
  • A women with an entire bunch of bananas balanced on her head.

(Seriously, I cannot stress enough that this nation is contianed entirely within a mountain range. Gorgeous? Yes. Easy territory for human-powered transport? Absolutely not.)
