Let me be your guide on the journey of one the greatest films about rebellion against unjust power; a film not only showcasing what is impossible through the combination of body and mind, but stoking the flames of justice and ambition within us.
Early in his career, Lau Kar-Leung choreographed a sizeable chunk of Shaw Brothers' martial arts film catalog, often taking the acting role of the villain with his martial arts prowess on full display. What that background means as a director is a lot of visual storytelling through choreographed action. What's particularly good about his action scene work is that it's filled with subtext and visual confidence. Nothing really gets it perfectly right like this.
The star of this film is Lau Kar-Leung's professional "god-brother",Β Gordon Liu. After years of collaboration and building kinetic understanding in Lau Kar-Leung's martial arts crew, Gordon was asked to take the lead role and nailed it. Launched his career into starring in a whole slew of Shaw Brothers classics and he still shows up when desperately needed.
