Good Morning. Hello. How are you? #1884

GMHHAY's first-ever double issue.

Good morning good morning hello hi how are you I love you I miss you are you getting enough sleep? Eating okay? Not consuming too much social media? Have you texted a friend lately? Drop a line, just hit reply, say hi. I’m here if you need me.

Gonna do a big ‘ole DOUBLE ISSUE OF GMHHAY today. First ever.

I am headed to Boston tomorrow to see the first ever Tear Garden tour. They have been a band since 1988 and they have never toured before. All signs point to it being a very good show. The Reddit commenters (famously generous, Reddit commenters) are all happy with the show, the instrumentation is exactly what I want. I can’t convey how excited I am about this show. I am perpetually nervous something is going to go wrong and I am going to miss it. You know what? I should probably just head to the airport now, get an early flight. Because of this show and the timing of the flight, it is unlikely I will do a GMHHAY tomorrow. Last Boston trip I got around it by writing it the night before, but that is also unlikely this time round. Because, assuming I have my shit together, which I most assuredly do not, I should be going over to Red’s Boat and RV storage tonight with the ‘ole drone and getting some nice sunset photos for the site so Douggy Pfeff can put em on the home page, in a continuing effort to get Google to believe we are a real business.

Probably won’t get to that till next week, though.

Also I am sort of out of sorts at the moment, and when I am out of sorts, the only thing that helps is writing. Yesterday after I got home from the Endodontist and dropping Jane off at school, I wrote:

  • 2,000 ish words to you

  • 1,000 ish words to myself

  • 700 ish words to unknown colleges and universities in the form of a letter of recommendation

  • 1,000 words to Jane

  • A boatload of emails

Nearly 4,000 words, all before 10 AM, just to get my brain in order.

Writing, man. It saves ones life.

I could probably write to you 2,000 words about this product but honest, I do edit. A bit.

Look I am not happy to admit this, but a thing I am still absolutely terrible at is reading anything on the internet that starts with “I see you all not” or “You don’t even know” or “Men can’t,” or “Leftists be like” or whatever: some generalization in which I am, linguistically and ostensibly included. Now, I know you know this feeling. But we are all required to ignore it. I mean, we should ignore it. I get rationally that since I am, I do know, I can, I am not like, etc., this blanket sentence does not include me. But man, I am fucking terrible at feeling it, believing it. I strive to be better. I do I do I do.

The Upworthy viral “this one thing you didn’t know” and “you wouldn’t believe” headline era of 2009 was very hard on me.

ANYWAY, I have often thought it would be useful and fun — well, not fun at all actually, but… well, just useful — to do a GMHHAY where I just wrote them all out. All the things the internet tells me that I need to say out loud because they are looking at me, they see me. Gaza is a genocide, Trans lives matter, etc. etc. Things that seem patently obvious to me, things I writer in here all the time.

But, god, there are just so many. And imagine if you left one out. Dude you forgot to say Furries are fine. Furries are fine! I am sorry!

Just in the last 24 hours: The Supreme Court essentially condoned torture and denied the fact that the US is a signatory to several treaties and allowed the administration to send people to corrupt and dangerous foreign lands with which they have never had an association.

The US left Iraq after two decades of military occupation did you know this? Two decades! Today! NBD.

Trump intentionally tried to stall AI regulation with a pageant and fake self-regulation bullshit.

A Republican Senator tried to frame an innocent and noble man and got caught in the act and nothing will happen to him.

Israelis attacked and killed a bunch of Palestinians who were trying to return to their village. I mean this is every day but it happened again just FYI.

We found radio waves coming from a planet for the first time ever! There might be life!

Nine Hundred people in Pennsylvania have gotten Measles as our government continues its death spree. A

Major English rock star — seriously: 20 million records sold, two albums on the Rolling Stone greatest albums of all time list, might be Banksy — is facing thirty fucking years in prison for holding up a sign that said “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine.”

Thirty fucking years. For a sign.

They are going to execute a woman in Tennessee today. First in the state in 200 years, but the sixteenth in the country this century. There were no dissents on the Supreme Court. “Cruel and unusual punishment” does not mean death. Death is not cruel. The eighth amendment means nothing.

And, of course, the world (well, the good part of it) has found its voice in expressing outrage over rape culture. Once again.

Do I need to write this every day? I think about this a lot! I am constantly hectoring you guys with my woke AF political outrage about this or that. It is, by far, the GMHHAY segment that gets the absolute least amount of engagement, ever.

And yet, I feel like I should do this!

And I guess I will keep doing this.

SORRY NOT SORRY.

FUCK. I just found out I have a 9AM call. Dammit. I thought I didn’t have any meetings today. Well shit, you are going to get this FIRST EVER GMHHAY DOUBLE ISSUE so late. So late. I am sorry. Back in jif.

OKAY. I am back. God. High-powered business meetings on Zoom. I get so sweaty. Why is that? Lemme change my shirt. ANYWAY. WHY DO I GET SO SWEATY.

SO. Two nights ago, I was reading this Threads thread of, like, 200,000 women explicitly naming their rapists. Everyone is of course pissed off about the Cornell situation. It was intense! It was crazy. Hundreds of men. Normal men. First name, last name, sometimes age, usually city and state. The largest cohort of accused were family members. Then spouses. Then dates. Then a group you could call, I guess, lifelong crimninals: people in jail, murdered, etc. Maybe clergy after that, then the “movie” crimes: women whose cars broke down, that sort of thing.

But the largest group was family members.

So many dads and brothers.

Harrowing read, that thread.

An interesting non-rape-related aside on this was that a shocking number of them listed were from Fullerton, CA. Because the woman who started the thread was from Fullerton, and Threads was being Threads, recommending the thread to everyone in their network, and their network first, before it eventually broke containment into the wider web. But this nuance is lost on a lot of people and, thus tons of people were asking “what the fuck is up with Fullerton?”

And even though I understood what was happening, my god: Never go to Fullerton, CA, women.

We’re listening this morning to Uboa’s first album, Sometimes Light. It’s on Bandcamp. No vinyl release, not on mainstream streaming platforms, thus I have never previously listened to this 2010 masterpiece from Melborne-based Xandra Metcalfe. My god, it is so good. If you like noise and drone and metal and video games and terror or any of those, I guess. I love this band so much I have the same shirt twice — once in black and once in pink. It says CATGIRL DEATH INDUSTRIAL on it. Jane loves it.

Lotta good commentary in the GMHHAY slack around the letting-food-cool discourse. I stand by my belief there should be a specialized cool-your-leftovers fridge in every kitchen. There is a food expert or two in the GMHHAY Slack and their answer to this is that you can let it cool over time, but not too much time. Like maybe an hour. I cannot do this, of course, because if I leave my rice on the counter for an hour, I am by the transitive property of attention, leaving my food on the counter for 6 to 24 hours. I made rice yestereday and sat there blowing on it for five mintues before putting it in the fridge in a vain effort to not hasten the spoiling of, I don’t know, my strawberries or grapes or blueberries or whatever. I did not enjoy this. I want a small second fridge. Or sixth. Fuck. We own a lot of fridges. Hrm actually yeah maybe I can put it in the wine fridge.

Possible Reverb Chamber area

ALSO: Longtime GMHHAY readers may recall my fondness for Tom Yum Bone Broth. I will make, like, eight quarts of this shit at a time. EIGHT QUARTS OF BOILING BROTH. It would be absolutely insane to put EIGHT QUARTS OF STEAMING BROTH into the fridge at the same time, everything would warm up. But, then, EIGHT QUARTS OF HOT BROTH will not fit in the small custom-built Japanese Cooling Fridge I imagine. A quandary.

(It’s weird to me “quandary” has two Rs, but my grammy taught me right on that one did someone say Scrabble.)

ALSO: Emma and I were talking about this, and “fried rice syndrome” aka Bacillus cereus and she made a good point: “You know how whenever you’re on your Tom Yum Bone Broth diet you get the shits? Maybe it’s because you leave it out all night to cool.” We always thought it was because of the no food and 10+ Thai peppers, but. Shit. Maybe she has a point. A shit point. About shit.

Also the reason I am focused on this being a Japanese fridge is because Americans can’t make good small fridges. They are all garbage. Let me refer you to the canonical work on this topic:

I mean, this is one of three hour-plus-long videos Technology Connections has done on fridges, but this one is the most relevant: tldr; small fridges suck.

But you just know the Japanese could make an amazing one.

BUT NOT US HAHAHAHAHAHAHA AI SI DARIO WOOOOO

SPEAKING OF DARIO ARNGENTO AMODEI: Anyone watch SNL this week? Man, that was bleak. Mayhaps the worst episode I’ve ever seen, and I am not an SNL doomer, I mostly love all casts and have been liking the casts a lot lately. I suspect it was unwise to use a sports star for Episode 1 of the season: not a lot of natural comedic chops and the cast is rusty. It did not help that Katseye was the musical guest and man I like Kpop (and fake Kpop!) as much as the next person but they leave me dead inside.

BUT BUT BUT: Jane Wickline! National treasure! Carrying the Cast! It is unclear to me why they no longer let Sarah Sherman fly her freak flag, but they sure do let Jane. Jane did the most amazing impression of Dario Amodei. I mean, he’s not a household name, Weekend Update bombed overall and thusly she bombed with it, but my god she was so good. SO GOOD.

Wonderful.

I have, in fact, elected to go with the book about the Great LSD bust as my next book. Thank you, umm, Steve I think, from the WITI Slack for recommending it a few months back.

(Whoops had to pause again and adjust an employee’s raise. Done).

It’s a good book, exactly what I needed: a history book about something interesting and relevant, but not current, not tied to the impending doom of the whole world, etc. I am enjoying it. And this 2000 bust of the “man who made all the acid” has loomed in my subconscious since it happened, and I am looking forward to a clear history of it all.

Unfortunately this is a book, and books are long, so we gotta go through all that boomer rebellion psychonaut 60’s shit, Timothy Leary and Owsley and Richard Alpert Ram Dass and Ken Kesey and Auldus Huxley and on and on and on and… man. You know what? Kinda done with the drug-addled component of the 60s counterculture.

Bit tired of psychonauts. I mean, they’re fine. Acid is kinda useful in certain situations — most effective treatment for alcoholism known to man, etc. — but also, man. No evidence to me that had you succeeded in dosing the world that anything would have been any better. I guess maybe they were, like, 60% right? Plus they found a not-terrible cause to devote their lives to and I do appreciate any person who can find a single cause to which to devote their lives. Especially when it’s (relatively) harmless. But man I do not need to hear about these chumps ever again. used to be cool they morphed into the internet people but they also morphed into stock traders n hedge fund people n shit and also the internet kinda didn’t turn out the way they wanted any more than it would have turned out how they wanted had the entire world turned on tuned in and dropped out and been here now or whatever.

Man this is probably exactly the same as some kid telling me they don’t care about Kurt Cobain. Pat Smear, the only remaining member of Nirvana.

Anyway, I am eager to get to the part in the 80s and 90s when I lived and you could buy the shit by the quart and my friends all too waaaay too much until it disappeared.

And the chemistry shit in the book is real good too. Answers a lot of questions I’ve had.

All right all right we can start to (start to: we still got MUSIC to talk about) wrap this up. I have HUGE NEWS a BIG EVENT coming up that I was ALSO going to talk about today but that would turn this into a TRIPLE edition of GMHHAY and the world is not ready for that. So if all goes well, I can write Friday and tell you about Tear Garden, Monday about CHORES and BOSTON FRIENDS then unveil my VERY EXCITING NEWS on Tuesday of next week. That should be good. You’ll love it.

JANE JANE JANE. Man the music gods were good to Jane and I this morning. We added TWO songs to the new Daddy-Jane Playlist – DJP (distinct from DDJP, Daddy-Jane Dance Party). It was very exciting. She liked “All the Things I have Done” by the Killers and “Heartbeats” by the Knife. I mean, who wouldn’t like either one of these songs? We got to sit in the car singing “I’ve got soul but I’m not a solider” over and over and it was just great.

She was good about not arguing with me ending videos last night but then promptly took it all out on Emma at bedtime, refusing to do anything. So reinforcements in the form of Daddy were called in and my strategy was to JUST LAY ON HER. Just lay on her. Not with all my weight or anything, not like abusively just… annoyingly. And it was so great because I was being totally silly and she was so committed to the bit of throwing a giant fit but also she knew it was hilarious and would be sitting there screaming we’re the worst parents while also giggling.

Did it work? No. But it was fun. And it did kinda change the mood enough Emma could bring the long miserable evening to a close. This is exhausting.

I kinda think we might just… not do bedtime one night? Like just plop her upstairs and say “you’re on your own. See you.” And see how it goes.

She might find it the best thing ever or the worst thing ever.

I gotta tell you man, some setting must be tweaked or something because my morning music time was so great and all from a very specific, like, 1999-2009 ish era. I mean, I have 15,000 songs on this playlist and it was just pumping out oughts-banger after oughts-banger. In addition to the two Jane and I added to the DJP, well hold on a sec. Lemme make you a playlist of em in order.

All right I mean clearly, looking at this, I had something going on with my playlist selection this was obviously not 20 songs randomly selected from 15,000. BUT MAN WHAT BANGERS. I have rearranged a bit. I did not play “Prayer to God” or “Go tell the women” to Jane. She did like Reindeer Section too, though.

AND THEN I went to McDonald’s this morning, the old-men-and-landscapers-holding-pen, and they played “Break It Down Again” by Tears for Fears and then they played “Roam” by the B-52s. I used to hate that song but I can’t ever hate it now, and I listen to it in a totally different light after Julee Cruise selected it as the song to die to. God. That. yeah. God.

I do not know if this is true on Apple Music on, ahem, Apple devices, but on Android, as of, like, six months ago, they did a tweak to it in CarPlay Android Auto where the progress bar, when a song is playing, is now squiggly. AND it is tinted a color to match the album art. It is real weird. I kinda like it but also… it is real weird. A yellow squiggly progress bar is weird.

I don’t have a picture of this. I will get you one. I know you care.

ONE LAST MUSIC THING: Duet Emmo is reuniting and playing their first show ever, on Jane’s birthday, October 27th. I believe this is also my friend Jon’s birthday, and he gets to go, and I am SO JEALOUS. I mean, Tear Garden takes priority for me, but getting to see two members of Wire with Daniel Miller? I fucking LOVE DUET EMMO. I am so jealous.

I wonder if this means there is a DOME gig in our future. DOME is Gilbert and Lewis from wire. Duet Emmo is Dome plus Daniel Miller from Mute. DOME MUTE, DUET EMMO, get it?

Forty-Five years since their only album. This is even longer than Tear Garden!

Okay man I think I got everything out today. I mean, I did but I didn’t, you know? SPECIAL SURPRISE ANNOUNCEMENT NEXT WEEK.
