Good Morning. Hello. How are you? #1800
First day of school, NYC algorithmic pricing law, routines!

Good morning good morning good morning! Wow, issue #1800 that is crazy. Two thousand here we come.
First day of school! Return to my fall routine! Oh frabgeous day caloot callay! My god I love my routine. Just the best. Jane is all off to school, very excited. Emma came along for the first day. Jane drew on the sketch app in my car, and I read all my morning email newsletters before 8AM. Such a nice change from all summer where I am haphazardly trying to read them all throughout the day.
Had a great dream involving Ashley and her kid who was 14 in my dream and we talked a lot about cars and saw a bright blue Cybertruck. Then Doug picked us up and he was a mailman again, tooling around delivering mail in a burgandy ‘06 Accord. We were all in a town called Conduit, CA, which I don’t believe exists. It was a company town for Conduit, which in my dream was a legacy American HVAC company. The town was deserted, you know, American manufacturing hollowed out, like in a Springsteen song.
Carrier. I was thinking of Carrier. But in my dream it was Conduit. Huh.
We went to the grocery store this morning and the old guy was still there and we chatted about Zevia sales and how our summers were. Emma was sleepy and slow and I was all hyped and excited and and amped up because I went to sleep at 9:30. Routines! Pedantry! Oh, my heart.
Morning luxury Diet Coke. Fretting about the price of Zevia. Prodding the broccoli. Trying to say hi to other people I see all the time at the grocery store and them looking at me like I’m a loon. THE BEST.

I was briefly worried some of my favorite characters from the school morning Jane drop-off line were going to be gone, their kids having graduated off to middle school. But the floppy-haired boy is still there and Superman car is still there and creepy giant black Lincoln Navigator is still there. ROUTINE!
New vice principal, though. Not so sure about that. TBD.
What’s today? The 25th? I had this epiphany yesterday: every morning I write the date down twice: once when I do my blood pressure, once when I transcribe these words into my big Scrivener file of all the GMHHAYs.
And yet I never know what day it is. How is it I still never know what day it is?

Listening this morning to the only album from Ashes and Diamonds, the latest project from Daniel Ash, of Love and Rockets, Bauhaus and Tones on Tail fame. Came out last year, ish. Gave it two listens, liked it more than one would expect for someone so late in their career, added it to my Discogs wantlist and the other day a cheap-ish copy popped up on Discogs, so here we are. It’s solid. I like it. Daniel Ash still has a good mix of bluesy rock, psych, drone, and gothishness going on. I don’t know who these collaborators Bruce Smith and Paul Spencer Denman are. Oh shit Todd’s gonna give me so much shit. Bruce Smith was the drummer for the Pop Group, The Slits, African Head Charge and Pil, my god. Whoops. Should have heard of him. Pretyy handsome fellow, too.
Paul Spencer Denman was Sade’s bassist. Well heck yeah. What a band.

NYC has instituted a law requiring companies to declare that they are using algorithmic pricing involving your personal data when they are doing so. This is a good law, and in the old days, I suppose it might even have had an impact on companies. But disclosure laws don’t really change company behavior anymore, least of all tech companies. They are utterly confident in their oligopolies and are shameless about it. As someone who was riding around Ubers in NYC before the service even launched, I feel I can say with confidence: the city never should have let this shit happen. Who doesn’t miss trying to call Northside to get a car or standing in the rain on Allen street unable to hail a cab. Uber, man. So great but also just the worst. Why do things have to be the worst.
Someone should write a thesis on the decrease of the efficacy of disclosure laws and shaming companies contrasted with the level of oligopoly inherent in an economy.
Maybe I shoulda stayed in school.

Uh oh shit I have run out of things to say. My giant list of GMHHAY topics seems stale and out of date. The news moves so fast. Life moves fast. Ferris Buheler was not kidding. I still do not know how to spell “Bueller.”
You know what? Maybe we’ll just keep it short today. I will try and get some new topics going on my list today. Or maybe I’ll try and tackle one of the big ones this week now that we have time. I am so excited to have time again. Oh my god it’s 8:42 AM and I am almost done with my daily chores. This is amazing.
I hope Jane likes her third grade teacher.
I hope her friends that aren’t in her class are in her specials.

Oh man you know what else is great about having my morning routine back? Mix tapes made from morning drive time! How exciting. This mix is great! So much great music! Music is great! I love music! I did music! I am a golden god!

Talk tomorrow, fair friends.
