Good Morning. Hello. How are you? #1797

Even more Get Off discourse, Pheobe Bridgers, Apple ATT and Germany, Daisy Chain Fields planning, typical Gen X angst

Hey there what’s up. Look at me I managed to get up before 9 AM. I am so ready to start getting up at 6:30 next week. It’ll be no problem, really.

So the thing I didn’t remember is, Prince is a vegetarian. Therefore, when the lady in “Gett Off” says she wants to eat ribs, at his Paisley Crib, well, Prince may well have taken it as a personal offense. Especially since there is a hint of combativeness in the woman’s voice. Still, I maintain this is no reason for him to go and start negging her, making fun of her ill-fitting dress and whatnot.

This bit of information came to me from a GMHHAY Slack member who grew up in Minneapolis, would run into Prince when they were teenagers, and is briefly visible in the Purple Rain video and if that is not the coolest thing ever, well, then, I don’t know what is.

Another GMHHAY reader seconds the theory about “ribs” being a biblical allusion. This would make a lot of sense, but… I still don’t understand… how?

In the book I am reading, Ian McEwen’s What Can We Know, the “protagonist” (perhaps. we shall see. I am not done) works in a college in the year 2100 teaching a class called 90-30, which studies history between 1990 and 2030 using our digital footprint. The college has completely recovered and interpreted the digital footprint of 5 people – three normies and two celebrities — as an example of, well, now that I think about it, what we can know about a person from that period. He casually mentions that there is a near infinite number of research possibilities for his students.

WELL. If I lived in the 2100s and went to this Nigerian version of Oxford, I would totally write my thesis on the lyrics to Prince’s “Get Off.”

Also, 23 positions in a one night stand is just too many positions.

4 if you’re sober, 12 if you’re drunk.

Everyone on the internet feeling compelled to write about Natalie Harp when you could be writing about Gett Off.

I am finally getting around to listening to the entirety of the new Phoebe Bridgers album this morning and I must grudgingly admit it is (probably) as good as everyone is saying. why do I say this grudgingly? I mean, I have been listening to Pheobe Bridgers for six years and two months exactly, when I first listened to Punisher. God bless anal-obsessive recordkeeping. I got no beef with Phoebe, though mayhaps I would grudgingly admit under pressure I wish she used a bit more toner in her blonde but that’s not relevant here.

I guess what’s going on is that I am Gen-X freaked about how big she’s getting. I saw someone tweet skeet something recently that was along the lines of “I love Phoebe but seeing her in a stadium is deeply weird and upsetting to me” and I suppose that is roughly in sync with where I am. I want Phoebe to come to Cat’s Cradle I don’t want to have to go see her at.. (looks it up)… the Boston Garden? Three nights at the Barclay’s Center? My god my god.

I mean. I know this is good. This is good! There are millions of Americans listening to awesome music! Is there a millimeter of air between Phoebe and the criminally unknown Cassandra Jenkins? Do I wish the kids listened to more good music? Yes, of course, but Rick this is a good thing. Let go of your generational baggage. Embrace Phoebe’s success. You want this. You want this. You want this.

My god this “Bobby” song rips. So good.

Hey good news Germany agreed with France and said Apple was self-dealing with their ATT prompts and declared that Apple had to treat itself like every other company in the privacy prompts that they do. This has been irking me for almost a decade now. Apple has agreed to fix it. This will only happen in the EU, apparently. Apple will keep self-dealing here in America and pretending they are a good company while the rest of us are evil, when they give you a privacy tracking prompt, even though everyone does the same thing.

BUT there is good news (that, is, if I am reading this right) for app developers in America, which is that Germany also said that Apple and GDPR could become a single prompt. Apple ATT was always kind of superfluous in the EU since it was effectively doing what GDPR was already doing, but Apple forced it — or the EU forced it, who can say – so a user had to consent twice and it was just annoying for everyone. So, this will be a nice change both for the user and the app developer.

I was ranting about exactly this in GMHHAY about five years ago but the wheels of European Justice turn slowly and they are just getting around to changing it now. but fuck, man, at least the wheels of European Justice turn at all, unlike, well, you know.

Purchased our hotel for Daisy Chain Fields festival. Two nights in Irvine. Then we’re going up to LA for a single night, gonna settle in to some posh hotel and have “office hours” and let friends come visit us. Debating Hollywood or Santa Monica. I am kinda tempted to do what I always do which is get a poolside room at the Roosevelt, but Emma is worried about the shitty rush-hour drive to LAX in the morning. And I must grudgingly admit that if my daughter is going to spend a single day in LA, Santa Monica will probably be more fun for her. Plus we could go to the beach and take a friend walk on the pier or something. Need to decide this today.

My god I have been so busy this week. I am overwhelmed. It is a lot. So much work stuff and oh I don’t think I told you that the Boat and RV facility is finally open! All very exciting. I need to get out there and take some photos for you. And I will probably be hitting you guys up for Google reviews, eventually, once we convince Google we are a real business, which is proving shockingly difficult because we’re a self-serve storage facility and apparently this kind of business does not exist according to Google. It is really weird. You have to have a person on-site to be a business according to Google. Except for certain exceptions. Like self-serve laundromats. But not self-serve boat and RV storage facilities.

Maybe we should start a laundromat.

BUT I have tomorrow off, which means three days of chores. I am very excited about that. I need to fix my grape trellis and weed and take photos in the attic for the structural engineers (a whole other saga that has been transpiring this week) and check on the Serenity Walk repairs for the Neurodivergent-Affirming Pediatric Speech Therapists and and and. SO MANY CHORES. I told myself I was going to take a week off for chores once Sept rolled round but I honestly don’t think I can. Work is too crazy. Plus it’s still 90 degrees out. I need it to cool down some.

Maybe October.

And at Gymnastics last night, Jane’s class usually has 20 or so people in it, and there were only 2. So each of them got about 10 times more runs at the balance beams or uneven bars or whatever than what they usually do. They were both so exhausted it was so cute. She was actually tired yesterday, you don’t see that very often.

I have a big important work call in 28 minutes so when I woke up, I made Jane’s breakfast and brought it up to her in the playroom so I could tell her mommy would be waking up soon and to not come downstairs.

She was sitting on the toilet with a full set of colored pencils splayed out before her drawing a shockingly detailed drawing in her sketch book.

On the toilet.

And the drawing was super good. I gotta get a photo of it for you.

Still no time for a playlist so I give you another from you evening Youtube watching, this one Avalon Emerson live from (I think) the knockdown center? This is of my interest since as soon as I finish planning this LA trip I need to work on my trip to NYC to go to to the Knockdown Center to see Underworld in a couple weeks. I have never been.

And Avalon is so great. Perfectly delivering and electronica and pop. Working in both fields and killing it in both. Just phenomenal. I want to see her so bad. And she’s playing Music Hall of Williamsburg and I want to go one more time before my wedding venue closes. But I don’t think I can pull it off. Alas.

Bye bye fwends.
