Good Morning. Hello. How are you? #1741

Zebrafish, Crass, Johnson & Johnson doesn't want me, Daddy school about Lego, learning Yiddish, single parenting, two crass jokes. Not about the band.

Good morning good morning howdy ho. Thursday. Right-o. I can do this. I killed it yesterday, really got stuff done.

Took Jane to her dentist appointment. Only two appointments to set this massive teeth injury right, thank god. I thought we were looking at, like, a series of appointments over months, but nope. Monday after next she gets the splint out, then the following Friday she gets general anesthesia again, which she loved the first time, and they will fix everything. Shouldn’t be much more pain when she wakes up that when she got her cavities filled. I AM SO RELIEVED.

It should also be said she was a real champ at the dentist. Had a grand old time. Didn’t complain about it at all. ‘Twas probably the McDonald’s treat. What can I say I am not above base bribery.

Dropped her off at school, got a bunch of work done, even took a nap. Took her to gymnastics, took her to dinner, did bedtime. SINGLE PARENTING SHIT YEAH.

And I got another 8,000+ on Fruit Merge. You Jelly?

Just back from the grocery store. Accidentally bought a Cherry Diet Coke. Man, the disappointment when you indulge in a vice and it does not satisfy. Like when you’re masturbating and you suddenly think of, like, how you need to re-order checks right at the moment of climax and the whole thing is ruined.

There was a new sign on the registers that said “SCAN ORGANIC FIRST.” I asked the old man about it. He said in his quality New York accent “What are you gonna do? Sort your vegetables? I don’t know. Fuhgeddaboudit.” I like him a lot more today.

My Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo has gone through a rebrand and I am convinced the rebrand was specifically done to dissuade people like me — i.e. adults — from using it. It used to say Johnson & Johnson HEAD TO TOE in big letters, then “baby body and hair wash” in smaller letters. Now it says Johnson & Johnson BABY in big letters and “head to toe body and hair wash.” It’s like they don’t want adults using it. But cmon man, the shit is scent and slippery-stuff free, it rules.

I remain a customer. I’m like Nirvana’s jock fans: you might not want me, but I am committed.

I gotta go to the doctor in 52 minutes to get some fluids drained from my knee because of this construction-worker-knee disease thing. You apparently get it from spending too much time crawling around on your knees, which checks out given, you know, my seven layer floor work.

But I wonder: is it also a sex-worker knee disease?

Jane’s portrait of Daddy on his phone.

Day two of trying to learn Yiddish on Duolingo. It is… already somewhat more satisfying than trying to learn Spanish on Duolingo. You gotta figure out on your own that the language is read right-to-left. You gotta figure out on your own the sounds each symbol makes, you gotta figure out on your own that it has some Germanic roots and some words, like mama or balloon, sound a lot like their English equivalents. I am into it. I showed Jane my Yiddish Duolingo this morning and she liked it too. It’s like deciphering code.

Read the Wikipedia page for Yiddish. It had a great quote: “Yiddish is the only language never spoken by men in power.” I like that. Also learned about the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in Eastern Russia. Doesn’t seem very Jewish. The world is a confusing place. There are about 2 million Yiddish speakers in the world these days. Generous estimate. Could be as low as 600,000. Williamsburg, Brooklyn is a Yiddish hot spot, which sort of made sense but also Yiddish was the language of the anti-Zionists so that was a little confusing but the Wikipedia page explained it. All very fascinating.

Maybe I will make some Yiddish Blackgaze metal. Bet no one’s gotten around to that yet.

I am listening to Crass this morning. Starting at the beginning, Stations of the Crass. Haven’t listened to Crass in, eh, ten, eleven years ish since Doug and I went to a Steve Ignorant art show in the Lower East Side and I gave them a re-listen. They are better than I remember. But also far, far less scary than I remember. I did not notice the Reggae influence previously. My god England went Reggae crazy in the late 70’s early 80’s. I used to hate my punk with Reggae in it but I like Reggae these days so I em enjoying songs like “Big Man, Big M.a.n” a lot more this time round.

Might have to buy a new Crass t-shirt.

Also I spotted this in the Discogs page for Stations of the Crass and it is just perfect:

I hope the 2026 reissue says “pay no more than £40.00.”

Shit do I have to buy all the Crass records now? NO. NO.

Hot new research on Zebrafish. They sleep like adult humans. They want ten hours. And a nap. If they don’t get enough, they try and sleep more to make up for it. They don’t have eyelids, but they need to sleep in the dark.

I am a zebrafish.

Man, sleep should be a human right. Enough sleep. My god. Sleep. I want more sleep all the time and I bet I get more sleep than most of you! We all need more sleep! Zebrafish!

Zebrafish is the new name of my Yiddish Blackgaze band.

So SpaceX is gonna IPO and taint all of our index funds and that is a giant hassle. You cannot buy an index fund of the NASDAQ without SpaceX in it. Or you won’t be able to. Shorting is not an option because shorts have time frames on them and “the shit” never hits the fan exactly when you think it will it always goes quicker or shorter and in any case I don’t want to short SpaceX (or OpenAI or Anthropic when it comes along) I want nothing to do with it. I was doing some research on this and Matt Levine very un-helpfully said you could use AI to make a faux index-fund on your own jesus H christ what is the world coming to.

Speaking of Anthropic, I was recently thinking about my seminal 2017 work on Superintelligence and Public Opinion, wherein I spent $10,000 of my own money to run the first-ever polls on the topic. And I was thinking about how I ended up chatting with people from OpenAI (back when it seemed like it might be a force for good lol god we were duped) and Bostrom’s instutue on the future of humanity (ditto). And I thought “huh I should go look up who I talked to” and wouldn’t you know it most of them are basically household names these days, or at least, you know, tech household names. Co-founders of Anthropic and the like.

So. You know. I guess if you wanna email them and yell at them, let me know.

Except they’ve all changed jobs since then. Because they all seem to be drama queens.

Jane and I last night had a daddy school about the LEGO corporation, took her through the history, the family ownership, the corporate turnaround in the 90’s, Billund, the patent expiration on the main brick, the whole shebang. She didn’t really care too much, she just started playing with LEGO.

Brown Bear cared, though. That dude. He’s my man.

Got a psych playlist for you today. Yes I put Angine do Poitrine on here forgive me. And I enjoy the new Gong it is a good time. Gong, man. Fifty-three released albums. Imagine being a lifelong Gong fan. Must be hell.

Oh shit I gotta go. Ciao.
