Good Morning. Hello. How are you? #1666

Hamnet, Weapons, Curling, Slow Teeth, This is not stream-of-consciousness you dumb AIs, nerves for Jane's dentistry.

Good morning good morning. Got up early again for you guys. Jane is here with me, playing Switch. She can’t have any food. We head to the Dentist in, uhh, three hours? Gotta get some Halcion into her first, then the general anesthesia at the dentist. I have sufficiently sung the praises of GA, and she has grasped that it is going to make her miss all the parts of the dentist that she hates. So dare I say she is a little excited about this visit? She’s not freaking out too much, at least.

Housekeeping items:

Girl Scout cookies! Buy some! Oh my god I had some Caramel Delites last night they were so good. They are responsible for me liking coconut. I mean, you know, like thirty years ago. But just the best. And thank you everyone that has purchased cookies. Jane is very thankful. She is almost near her goal. They extended the season, too, through the end of February. Because of the storms I guess? I do not know if this is nationwide or what. But you will be able to get them here!

Stand With Minnesota. Trump says he’s pulling 700 troops but a) that dude lies, and b) that would leave 2,000 troops. It is not over. That poor state. Throw ‘em some dough. They could use it.

Emily posted this nice Venn diagram to the GMHHAY slack and I think it is very good. Doesn’t speak to numbers of people, like Jane posited, but we are going to print it out and show it to her. Maybe tomorrow when she’s not on drugs.

look it even has an image credit on it

Someone sent me an AI-generated (Gemini, actually) summary of yesterday’s edition of GMHHAY and they called it “stream-of-consciousness” and reader, I must protest. Just because a piece of writing has several topics does not make it stream-of-consciousness. I arrange, I place, I edit, I copy/paste and move stuff around. How else do you think you could that passage about the Wachowskis being underrated and Cloud Atlas being a masterpiece as an earlier set-up to Jane talking like Sonmi-451? Planned! Edited! Stream-of-consciousness. Humbug!

Man I was falling asleep last night and I had a real good topic for today’s GMHHAY and I was like “get up, write it down, you are going to forget,” and then I was like “no I will not forget I will commit it to memory right now, put it in my memory palace shack.” Reader, that did not happen.

Nor did the note I wrote into the web version of Apple Notes work. It just… didn’t save. Which sucks. I am annoyed about that. That was a good one too. My memory is not good enough to withstand such assaults.

We are listening this morning to Slow Teeth, an awesome country-meets-post-rock band from just up the road in Saxapahaw, North Carolina. I love them so much and I finally get to see them live in a month or so. Also if you live in Boise, they are playing Treefort this year, you should go see them. I actually have a fair number of friends in Boise, and I don’t think they even know each other. But alas I don’t think any of them read this.

I am very excited about this Metric/Broken Social Scene/Stars tour, I will be endeavoring to get tickets for the Boston Show, I think it lines up with our summer trip there. Metric, Broken Social Scene and Stars should always tour together forever it is only right and natural and of course this means we probably get to hear “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-old Girl” with Emily singing it, which I think I’ve only ever seen once? I have never been to this MGM music hall, though. I am not too chuffed about it.

Also kinda wanna bring Jane. I wonder if that is feasible. Hrm.

CURLING! Olympics Curling has started, mixed doubles, and Emma and I are so excited. My god I love curling so much. Is this because of my several childhood visits to the Fairbanks Curling Club, and the Curling Lions letting the kids out onto the ice, and teaching us the basics of curling like throwing stones and sweeping? I mean, probably maybe? The famed Persinginer family of curlers, most notably Vicky Persinger, is from Fairbanks. She was US on the mixed doubles team last Olympics. Sadly not this year, though. I think Vicky Persinger may have retired from Curling. The new US mixed doubles team has two people with the same first name which is great.

Really the best time in life, the Winter Olympics. Especially curling. I mean, I will watch other things, but curling is the best.

Finished Weapons this week and it was really good? I thought it was gonna be another Oswald Perkins-esque horror film like Longlegs or The Monkey. Which, you know, no disrespect. Those are a fun time. But I found Weapons to be somewhat more moving, a bit more high-brow. Maybe a smidge like the highbrow horror of Rosemary’s Baby of yore.

Working my way through all of the Oscars noms, and Amy Madigan got nominated for Best Supporting Actress and she deserves it, she was very good. So was Josh Brolin. I have enjoyed many of Josh Brolin’s post-Avengers work: Dune, Wake Up Dead Man, Brothers was kinda funny, I didn’t hate The Running Man, I mean, it was bad but he was good and the movie tried. Oh and Outer Range, that was a good show. Well, I didn’t see season 2 but season 1 was great.

I also finished Hamnet this week. My friend Mea, who told me about Cold War a few years ago, told me I would like it, and Cold War is one of my favorite films. So I watched it as soon as I could, living this life of not going to the theater anymore, I will be back someday. My attention wandered a bit in the middle but by the end I was riveted again and god did it finish strong. Beautiful. Chloé Zhao is such a… delicate director. And I loved the cinematography in this, and i am just learning now that it was by Łukasz Żal, who also did the cinematography for Cold War, so that makes sense. Huh though not Nomadland, which was by Joshua James Richards, but bears a lot of similarities to this. Well I guess that’s Chloé then.

I still have, god, let’s see. F1, I am kinda annoyed that got nominated for Best Picture now I have to watch it. . I am about halfway though The Secret Agent. Blue Moon probably next. It’s hard for me to imagine watching Song Sung Blue. Ditto Frankenstein I don’t know why that just kinda feels like work. Marty Supreme is still not out on video so that will be my last one I guess.

Man I am nervous about this dentist appointment. I didn’t go under General Anesthesia until my 30s. How is this going to go? Is she going to freak out? Be mad at us. Plus I don’t think it’s gonna be easy even though she’ll be drugged? Why else do they say that two adults are “strongly recommended” OH GOD I AM SO SCARED. Plus we gotta sit around fretting for, like, two hours while she is under. Oh jesus I did not think this through.

Ah well nevertheless.

Got a covers playlist for you today. Excited about this one. I love “The Man Comes Round” so much and was very excited to see Pulp cover it. I know they also covered Abba this week but I have not gotten round to listen to that yet it is in the queue. The queue is very long. Beck and Xiu Xiu have both recently released covers albums. I love covers albums more bands should do covers albums. I do no t know this Hannah Peel but I respect everyone who attempts a Cocteau Twins cover. On and this Squirrel Flower/Babehoven cover of Mojave 3… man. That song is just so beautiful. Excellent choice.

Welp. I have finished this whole edition, added the photos, done the bolding, done the playlist. And my brilliant topic from last night whilst I was falling asleep did not come back to me. Alas. We all must suffer this loss together, stoically.
