Good Morning. Hello. How are you? #1643

2025 in Media

Good morning good morning. We leave for home tomorrow AM. Today is our last day in Somerville. We said goodbye to the Babka place. We are ready. Spent yesterday on the couch upstairs cozily watching Vampire films and eating Chinese food with friends. Would recommend.

So when you hear from me again, I will be back in NC, and I will be sending this out before 9AM again. East Coast early birds, thank you for your vacatational patience.

2025 in Media

For the last nine years I have been chronicling all of the media I consume. I did this because I was inspired by Stephen Soderbergh, years ago. Seemed a fun thing to try, see if anything came out of it. I cannot say much did, but I did get one great blog/newsletter post out of each year.

Here are the lists from 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016

And so we turn to 2025:

The Totals:

  • 22 books, up from 13 Books in 2024

  • 607 Albums, up from 579 Albums in 2024

  • 20 Live Acts, down from 60 Live Acts in 2024

  • 54 movies total in 2025, down from 34 New-to-Me Movies in 2024 plus the 28 re-watches in 2024

  • 36 TV shows, up from 30 TV Shows in 2024

Thoughts:

  • This was the ninth year I have done this. Is it worth it? Am I gaining anything? I think so, a bit? It has very occasionally proven useful to do a search on my Notes app and see if I have ever listened to an album or band before. My memory is definitely going, so that is nice.

  • If they ever, you know, sort out the issues of creators getting paid, the environmental devastation, the privacy issues, the justice issues and the encouraging of suicide and kiddie porn, I suppose this data could be useful in some future personal, private LLM.

  • For next year, I did do myself the service of moving this to a spreadsheet. Thus, going forward in 2026, I will no longer be using Soderbergh’s style. I am freakin sick of counting all the albums up every year. I will have to then paste the spreadsheet into Notes.app at the end of the year so they are all in the same place, but that’s fine. Way less work.

  • (Incidentally, Apple Notes.app is so bad with tables. I am somewhat shocked.)

  • I am sad about how few live shows I went to. I used to see 700, 800 acts a year. It is an abomination. But you know what? Standing around and staying up late is tough for me these days. We age. Maybe after I don’t have to wake up to take Jane to school in seven years or so.

  • I am so excited to stop reading epically long book series. I may still read some real long books this year (might be the year I tackle either War and Peace or some DFW).

  • I am excited to read more women authors this year my god. I miss them.

  • I really do need to watch more movies. Maybe I will go back to theaters this year.

Books:

Read a lot of books this year — well, compared to last year – but not a lot of variety. Only two non-fiction. What can I say, I need escapism. I finished Christopher Tolkien’s monumental work of scholarship, publishing nearly all of his father’s papers about Middle Earth in 12 volumes. I have now read two or three versions of every story in the Silmarillion. I think, in the end, the newer, assembled versions of The Fall of Gondolin, Beren and Luthien, etc., are probably more to the taste of your average fantasy reader, but I am happy I read this.

The VanderMeer books were a great quick read, and I love his social media presence. I feel welcome in the warm embrace of Southern Reach fandom.

And after being into the shows for years, and doing a re-watch this year, I am finally getting around to reading A Song of Ice and Fire. It is rewarding. I have a book and a half to go.

I am excited to mix it up next year. Gonna bring back some more non-fiction, some more women authors. May work up the gumption to continue on the all-too-real Parable of the Sower series.

I don’t really feel any qualification to recommend any of these books this year. Well. IYKYK on Tolkien and Martin. Malka Older is glorious and if you like low stakes, non-dystopian, cozy sci-fi, she is for you as ever. You really gotta be a pedant on 70’s softcore to read the Emannuelle book, thus far only released (afaik) with the new 4k Box Set, so, I leave that to your own discretion. VanderMeer is great but again, IYKYK.

Which leaves One Day Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad. Which I… Do I recommend? It is a tough read. It is a worthwhile read for sure. It is an educational read, but for me, mainly about El Akkad and the experience of the immigrants, not so much about the situation on the ground in Gaza. It is, of course, depressing AF. Tread with caution.

Recorded Music:

Wrote a whole separate post about this. It was exhausting. It took four hours. 607 new-to-me Albums. I am feeling good. It is New Year’s day. I’m on album 5. Maybe I can keep this pace all year hahahaha.

Man I love music.

Live Shows:

Absolutely terrible live act showing this year, down from 60 to 20, 300% by Trump math. I was too depressed. Was about to go see Pulp in DC, only club show, but the National Guard got called out and I couldn’t deal. I cannot convey how much money I spent on tickets to shows that I ended up not going to. Ridiculous. I would say I’m going to do better but it is hard. I have to get up so early. Someday.

No recommendations here because I can heartily recommend seeing every one of these life. Especially Gang of Four while you can. Hrm. Maybe my jury’s out on this current BJM tour. They really need to mix up tempos.

  • Gang of Four at Cat’s Cradle Carrboro

  • The Wedding Present And The Tubs At Motorco Durham

  • Peter Hook And The Light Live At Cat’s Cradle Carrboro

  • Pioneer Pickers At The Pioneer Museum Fairbanks, Alaska

Movies:

Asterisk = re-watch. Bolded is recommended.

I watch a lot of 70’s erotica. Sue me. It is a brutal world out there. I need the curves and soft focus. I am doing a lot of re-watches. Re-evaluating my childhood. Seeking comfort. That sort of thing.
