Hey! Weâve been hard at work over the past week setting up our new studio. We wanted our space to feel comfortable and inspire creative action. Weâve opted to purchase a lot of IKEA stuffâbecause itâs simple, colourful, easy to acquire, and easy to replaceâit doesnât matter if we smudge paint or charcoal on it. Also, it looks pretty good. And weâve got a whiteboardâwhich weâve used a ton already.
Thereâs still much to do! But, as you may have heard elsewhere, 80% of the work can be done in 20% of the time. Environment plays a massive role in how we feel and thinkâand thus how we create and work.
Itâs very easy to to get used to a spaceâwarts and all. And thatâs no good. Even with a tiny space, you can always make improvements that will help your productivity, mood, and creativity.
If this interests you, try this short exercise:
-
Start with, âI want to feel _____ when Iâm in my creative space.â Fill in the blank space with a word. You can write a new sentence for each word. Eg: I want to feel relaxed.
-
Then ask, âHow might I change this space to _____?â Rephrase point 1 into a how might I question, or a how might we question if youâre two or more. Eg: How might I change this space to be more relaxing?
-
Spend 10 minutes answering the above questionâwrite down possible answers on a piece of paper, or write them on sticky-notes and put them on a whiteboard. Eg: Add plants, add a diffuser, get a bean bag, play chilled music.
-
Then choose 1 to implement and see how it changes things. Eg: Get some plants.
And then, reflect and repeat! Maybe after a few days or weeks ð
