Hey! We’ve been hard at work over the past week setting up our new studio. We wanted our space to feel comfortable and inspire creative action. We’ve opted to purchase a lot of IKEA stuff—because it’s simple, colourful, easy to acquire, and easy to replace—it doesn’t matter if we smudge paint or charcoal on it. Also, it looks pretty good. And we’ve got a whiteboard—which we’ve used a ton already.

There’s still much to do! But, as you may have heard elsewhere, 80% of the work can be done in 20% of the time. Environment plays a massive role in how we feel and think—and thus how we create and work.

It’s very easy to to get used to a space—warts and all. And that’s no good. Even with a tiny space, you can always make improvements that will help your productivity, mood, and creativity.

If this interests you, try this short exercise:

  1. Start with, “I want to feel _____ when I’m in my creative space.” Fill in the blank space with a word. You can write a new sentence for each word. Eg: I want to feel relaxed.

  2. Then ask, “How might I change this space to _____?” Rephrase point 1 into a how might I question, or a how might we question if you’re two or more. Eg: How might I change this space to be more relaxing?

  3. Spend 10 minutes answering the above question—write down possible answers on a piece of paper, or write them on sticky-notes and put them on a whiteboard. Eg: Add plants, add a diffuser, get a bean bag, play chilled music.

  4. Then choose 1 to implement and see how it changes things. Eg: Get some plants.

And then, reflect and repeat! Maybe after a few days or weeks 🙂

🏆 Looom, this rad animation app I’ve been shouting about for the past few months, recently won an Apple design award. It’s a massive deal. So, if you haven’t already, go download it (https://ttkb.me/looom) and take my Intro to Looom class on Skillshare (https://ttkb.me/looom-class-sk) or TapTapKaboom School.
