Hey you awesome member of the Homo Sapiens species! Last week I wrote about how your environment affects you. (https://mailchi.mp/taptapkaboom/a-creative-environment) But environment is more than just a physical space you’re sitting in. It’s the totality of what’s surrounding you.

It’s how others treat you. It’s how you treat yourself. It’s what you let into your mind. It’s what you think about on repeat. It’s the people you hang out with. It’s what’s going on with the world. It’s the room your mind and heart are sitting in.

Imagine your heart and mind in a physical space—a house maybe. Is there dirty laundry on the floor? Dirty dishes? Rain dripping in? Boxes piled on top of each other? Or is there sunlight streaming through the windows? Coffee brewing? Waves crashing in the background?

It’s difficult to create when you’re stressed, tense, or worried. And not being able to make and create and express yourself often amplifies those negative emotions. You may feel the pressure mounting and the anxiety clawing its way into you inner-most being.

Sometimes even a beautiful studio or comfy home creation nook cannot spark creativity or prompt creation. It may be because your mental environment is tense and stressful.

One way to change your mental environment into one that fosters creativity is to practice gratitude—write down 3 things you are grateful for each day. It may not help overnight, but it will begin replacing the negative emotions with positive ones. And as you begin to create again, your positive emotions will be amplified.

How do you feel? Safe? Relaxed? Happy? Stressed? Anxious? Bitter? Creative?

I know the world may seem strange, different, stressful—maybe even dark and hopeless. But there are good things too. Creativity, and environments that foster it, play a big role in shaping and making a better world.
