Why does it get colder after the solstice?
Hi friends,
We did it—we are past the shortest day of the year (in the northern hemisphere). Tomorrow will have more daylight.
Why isn't the solstice the coldest time of the year? In the Northeast, January and especially February are cold. The delay in winter weather is because of seasonal lag, or more specifically, water (lakes, oceans, rivers, groundwater) storing heat for a long time. The temperature takes some time to adjust after the sunlight lessens.
I feel lag in my ability to do what I want to do, or be the person I want to be. Even if I set different intentions, my stored habits take over.
I signed up for a TikTok challenge in October (post a video every day!) and it was incredibly hard at first. But by the end of the month, posting a daily video from my phone felt like a habit.

If you're planning to make New Year's goals or resolutions, perhaps give yourself a lag time, a little space to gradually take those steps forward.
