January Django Bits

Hello and Happy New Year!

The last month or so there has been a fair bit of interesting Django news I wanted to update you on.

Jeff Triplett is new Django Software Foundation President

As you're probably aware there was a DSF Board election last month and our own Jeff Triplett was voted in as President

He was previous on the Board but stepped up for the role since Thibaud Colas did no run for re-election.

In his first few days, Jeff spurred the community to try and hit 100% on the Django Software Foundation fundraising goal. Pleased to report we actually went over 100% for the first time ever! Fundraising for the DSF is going to be increasingly important now that we have an additional Fellow and are looking to hire an Executive Director.

django-s3-express-cache

This update is from one of our clients The Free Law Project. They have a need to cache VERY large objects and created a great resource for that use case. Check out django-s3-express-cache which provides a django.core.cache backend using Amazon's new S3 Express Zone option.

It is an interesting use case I'm sure a few of our readers could take advantage of.

Nuremberg Trial Anniversary

November was the 80th anniversary of the Nuremberg War Trials. We've been working with the Harvard Law Library on updating their original Django project, taking over the hosting of the project while adding some features, improving performance and most notably dramatically increasing the content by hundreds of thousands of documents and millions of new images!

It's a fascinating project giving everyone the ability to search through all of the transcripts and evidence from the trials, including document scans you can zoom into deeply.

The project got a lot of press, and traffic, in November. To learn more about the project check out the Guardian story, this Reddit thread and Harvard's own news update about the project.
