Friday Fragments #27

A short and sweet one for a summery Friday.

Kazoo the striped kitten standing on the back of a coral couch, looking at the camera.
Kazoo’s growing up so fast. Hard to believe she’s been home three months now.

Happy Friday! I’ll be spending the day getting tattooed, so today’s newsletter is going to be short and sweet.

Scribblings

  • I was going to skip The End of Oak Street. It seemed like the sort of movie that’d make me more mad than happy. Then Slate asked me to talk about the dinosaurian creatures in the film and… yeah, I think we’re still waiting for the next great dinosaur movie.

  • You know that I love a good bite mark. For this week’s article for premium subscribers, I couldn’t resist digging into a new study on tooth damage enormous Miocene crocs left on mammal bones among the swamps of ancient Colombia. Chomp.

  • I made a let’s play! For this week’s fossil media post, I played through Blood Mall: Retaped and finally made it out of the mall in one try. And honestly it was so much fun I’m going to start making these let’s plays more often - I’m thinking theropods next. Sign up for the premium tier if you want to see them first.

Stomping to a City Near You

  • Tuesday! If you couldn’t make the July event, on August 25th I’ll be back at Snug Books for a little nonfiction book club make-up session. Bring your questions about When the Earth Was Green, and I’ll be happy sign whatever books you bring.

  • We have a T. rex! tour. When Tyrant Lizard Queen reaches you on October 27th, I’ll kick off an East Coast book tour to talk about Snaggletooth and her story. Here’s where I’ll be stopping:

  • Launch day! October 27th I’ll be at the central Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore.

  • October 28th at Scrawl Books in Reston, VA. This is a trivia night event, so make sure you’re ready for dino questions!

  • November 4th I’ll be in Lewes, DE at the public library for a joint event with Browseabout books.

  • November 5th I’ll be at Hive Mind Books, NYC!

  • November 6th I’ll be at the Harvard Bookstore in Cambridge, MA.

  • December 2nd I’ll be at the Natural History Society of Maryland in Baltimore.

If you’d like me to do an in-person or virtual event closer to you, encourage your local museum or library to get in touch.

Ear Perks

  • Stablercake has some rad dinosaur stickers in his etsy shop, perfect for the Triceratop and Tricerabottom in your life.

  • So you know the plant that kicks things off in Oak Street? A new study on those plants just came out. Pleuromeian lycopsids were everywhere after the end-Triassic mass extinction… and then they disappeared forever.

  • Special effects master Screaming Mad George passed away this week. If you haven’t seen Society, I very much recommend that you do.
