On a balmy evening, we enjoyed drinks and tunes to celebrate the opening of Material as Witness. I am so grateful for the support of the East Bay Photo Collective and the artists in this exhibition with their thoughtful work. You can see the show Fri-Sun through November 15. I printed a bunch of Riso handouts and they’re at the gallery; if you say ‘pretty please’ I might mail you one. You can also check out the work online if you aren’t local.

CURRENT HAPPENINGS

I am making new work, slowly. My life is also busy with applying for residencies and such, trying to see art, going to my Laney class, hanging with the kiddo, and driving to Sacramento to see my mom. I am finding time for studio, though. My new-to-me flatbed scanner is a fun toy and provides very hi-res scans; a goal is to size up the photo-based work I make. Below is a scan of a little piece of mica I bought at a rock shop, printed 10” long on transparency film, and the first cyanotype from it.

Fun fact, mica is harder to pry apart than I thought

Not enough detail, try again

I am printing my first woodblock print, it’s a multi-block with an ambitious number of colors (of course) and I hope to be done next week. And we are jumping into stone lithography soon. I have started graining my stone, which is a great arm workout. No idea what I will draw on it yet.

There are many stones like it, but this one is mine

What else? I have a weaving up in a lovely show at Kinhouse through the 30th.

In Texas, Your Package Has Been Delivered received a juror’s award at Paradiso, the exhibition accompanying Riso Rama. That was sweet and unexpected! Show’s up until November 13.

UPCOMING

  • The APAture show opens this Saturday from 6-9pm and I am always a little nervous to show such personal work - I mean everything I make is personal but this piece is directly about my family, and what we say and don’t say to each other. Come through!

  • Gallery 163, the locker gallery I started on a whim at Laney College, will have its second reception for Moss Darci-Maher on October 20 at 5pm. There will be tiny snacks at the tiny exhibition. The locker is in the Art Center building.

  • I’m hosting a Print Cafe at Reprographixxx in Berkeley on October 26 from noon - 2pm. If you ever wanted to see what the Riso hype is about, bring in a digital file or a drawing and let’s make some prints! PS please read about how to prepare on the website beforehand, that helps me immensely.

  • Please join us for an artist’s talk for Material as Witness on November 6 from 6-8pm.

  • Ivo turns 17 in November. 17! I can’t even believe it. He’s a good one.
