Celebrating History. Protecting the Future.

Hello ReMix Community,

We’re grateful to be building this community of changemakers with you!

Black History Is Not Optional. Equity Is Not Extra.

Across the country, funding cuts to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and reductions in school support programs are disproportionately impacting Black students and other historically marginalized communities. When resources are removed, opportunity gaps widen. Access to mentorship, academic enrichment, and career exposure in STEM does not shrink evenly. It shrinks where it is already fragile. ReMix Science & Care exists because we understand that talent is universal, but access is not.

Black History Month began as Negro History Week in 1926, founded by Carter G. Woodson. This year marks 100 years since the founding of what would become Black History Month. A century later, the fight for equitable access to education and opportunity remains unfinished. Celebrating history without protecting the future is not enough.

That is why honoring Black excellence in STEM is not simply about recognition, it is about responsibility.

As we close out Black History Month, we want to highlight a few Black STEM pioneers whose work fundamentally shaped modern science and medicine:

🔬 Dr. Marie Maynard Daly

First Black woman in the U.S. to earn a PhD in chemistry, whose research helped establish the link between cholesterol and heart disease.

🫀 Dr. Charles Drew

Pioneered large-scale blood banking and plasma preservation, transforming trauma and emergency medicine.

🚀 Dr. Aprille Ericsson

Aerospace engineer and one of the first Black women to earn a PhD in engineering from NASA-related programs, advancing spacecraft technology.

Black innovation has shaped modern science in ways that are foundational, not peripheral.

At ReMix Science & Care, we are committed to amplifying impact through tangible support. Microgrants, mentorship, and community engagement are not symbolic gestures. They are structural interventions.

What We’ve Been Up To

This month, Founder and Executive Director Skye Clayton volunteered alongside fellow students from Charles R. Drew University at the 5th Annual African Cultural & Community Well-Being Summit. ReMix Science & Care places deep importance on community engagement, and serving at events like this reflects our belief that impact starts locally.

Senait Admassu, President of the African Communities Public Health Coalition, shared:

“Your school volunteers’ professionalism, discipline, and dedicated service are beyond words. They honestly brought strength, structure, and grace to the summit, helping make it not only powerful but exceptionally well organized. Your team fit seamlessly with the rest of our group, elevating the entire experience.”

We are proud to show up in spaces that honor culture, health equity, and collective well-being.

Our Wins

This month, we officially launched our updated ReMix Science & Care website. The new site reflects our growth, our mission, and the clarity of where we’re headed. It offers a more streamlined experience, clearer information about our microgrants and mentorship programs, and an easier way for our community to get involved. This update is more than a redesign, it’s a step forward in building sustainable, accessible impact! Check it out at remixscienceandcare.org!
