Hello,
Without publishing that much content, this newsletter grew to 200 subscribers. Thank you all. From now on, I try to publish more.
Any feedback on what you expect is appreciated!
The HERMA 500 labelling machine has the ability to increase it's printing output via special activation codes. A manufacturer can install the machine and later - if required by demand - upgrade the speed by just changing the software configuration on the device.
This is not as fancy like Teslas "Download more PS" upgrade - but these machines are running within an industrial context in production lines. Changing hardware (for more speed) can be expensive and this option allows for flexibility for both manufacturers and Herma.
The labelling printer also has connectivity features and Hermas service portal looks promising.
I don't have access to internal numbers but the guess is, that producing the same printer for everybody is not that much more expensive while the revenue from later upgrades has a higher margin that just producing another printer.
OEMs are in for a hard time (2021) is a (older) blogpost that predicted the current economic downturn and is still relevant today.
Supply Chain challenges are now handled but the ability to sell new fancy machines is still limited in todays markets. After Sales service - or software upgrades as mentioned above - might be the solution.
I've asked the latest AI to generate images about the future of manufacturing. The image in this newsletter is generated as well - putting a CNC mill into the forest in the fight against the climate crisis (?).
Don't fall for the trap. Dreaming fancy pictures with StableFusion might not solve your energy problems right now but the underlying Machine Learning methods are changing every company.
CAD aided by generative design is not a new topic. New optimized parameters for your production could be generated as well as the summaries for service instructions. I'll collect more examples - so feel free to share what you think.
What started as a summer project is still going strong. Each week I receive feedback for the "EaaS Landscape" and exchange knowledge.
Above you find the latest version with now 180 companies listed. Click on the image for the larger version and more context.
Thanks for reading - if you like the content, feel free to recommend this newsletter to a colleague. Also give me feedback.
The next issues is already written (as a draft), so expect an update before Christmas. Until then keep pushing new ideas.
Best Regards
Philipp
