May 11, 2026 | 12.00 - 1.30 PM BST

Institute of Classical Studies (Online, Zoom)

I am a guest speaker in the online summer series Overlooked/Undercooked: Classical Reception in Colonial and Postcolonial Southeast Asia, exploring Southeast Asian postcolonial reception of classical literature, and hosted by the Institute of Classical Studies and the Classical Reception Studies Network.

I'll be speaking about my motivation and approach to creating the 21st century edition of the Alexander Romance - mainly my position as the death doula for Alexander the Great's restless wandering spirit. Alongside my other position as a Southeast Asian / Australian artist in deconstructing imperial legacy.

Come listen to me yak!! I'll also have a presentation and some speaking points that allude to the future of the comic, so if you want to get a little bit spoilered, this is your chance. ;)

The Carpet Merchant Book 1 Cover WIP

HGZNynia8AASYK2.jpg

The webcomic rerun of Book 1 is wrapping up this week. Obviously I've been possessed to make another brand new ornate illustration to celebrate (and promote) the occasion. Meaning... I am subjecting myself to suffering again!!!

The concept is a young Zeynel and Ayse surrounded by all of the narratively-important carpets that feature across Books 1, 2, 3 and 4. Very nice idea, except I need to draw these carpets. By hand. No copy and pasting!!

Some fun trivia tidbits: surrounding Zeynel are the tools of his profession: an astrolabe, prayer beads, reed pen and ink well, (a soon to be drawn pen box) and lots of leather-bound books. Ayse holds a portable yarn spinner, made out of modular pieces of wood.

What's Happened Since

Following my trajectory towards recovery (hopefully), I'm finally back to blogging.

  • Massive Life Update Update That Explains Everything - A post that more or less rehashes what I've spoken about across newsletters.
  • An Abberation - A scrawly post about a microaggression I experienced during a author's visit, which dovetails into my own mixed feelings about being a visibly successful Southeast Asian artist who makes and presents queer ways that otherises me, yet are crucial to my self-actualisation. Some thoughts on representation.
  • Other than that, I've been mostly tapping away working on two young adult graphic novel scripts. None of which is Alexander Comic... BUT!!!! I'm feeling very positive, given that before the sabbatical I was too stressed and exhausted to even work on anything.

I also finished writing half of a travelogue-memoir, about my first pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago ten years ago, and the circumstances in my life that led to that trip. It's only half-done is because the other half hasn't happened yet (the second pilgrimage). Still, there's enough of a script to draw. I'm very keen to work on this; the travelogue is one of the biggest personal comics that I've been aching to do for more than a decade, even before the first pilgrimage.

    Till very soon,
