My Life in Lino, Pride Edition

Happy pride! As expected, this has been my busiest month of the year so far, with drag, commissions, and pride parties (oh my!) keeping me very entertained and tired. The biggest news is that I produced and hosted my first drag show— which was a roaring success! I seriously feel like the luckiest demon clown alive, and I’m so grateful to my performers, my friends at Grandma’s Coffee Garden, and my family for helping to make it happen!

After the rain comes a rainbow! We got completely soaked while the audience hid safely under umbrellas :)

Now I’m sure the burning question you’re all wondering is: where on earth did I get my Dionysus chiton, with its pinecone and bull’s head border? Stop shouting! I’ll tell you. It’s a bedsheet from Savers (don’t tell my drag wife), which I printed with two linocut blocks I made specifically for this look! I was carving like crazy last month.

I freehanded the designs inspired by some ancient greek pottery, and tinted the blocks with a stamp pad. This makes it easier for me to see what I’ve carved away, but it does mean ink gets all over my hands. (Worth it. I don’t understand people who carve without doing this. How can you tell what you’re doing?)

I kept the carve pretty simple, and then printed along the edge of my fabric with white fabric block printing ink. Then I just folded and pinned my chiton in the peplos style and belted it with some rope.

I love combining my interests like this! I’m reminded of a time multiple years ago when I did some live lino printing at Fancypants way back before I was a performer myself!
