Responding to Our Environments

Hello dear ones,

It has been very hot this past week where I live, and my body has been needing much Horizontal Time in the afternoons and evenings, away from screens or books or stimuli.

If the air had been cooler, my body would have responded differently.

This seems obvious, doesn't it? (You might be wondering why I even wrote that.)

Root Living Journals: Red Rocks to Deep Dome Lake

Hello dear ones,

This week we're momentarily zooming out, as today's sprinkle of entries span a full year. From car camping on BLM land in Utah while waiting for the Red Rocks internship to start, through a winter and spring there, then a summer and fall working in the Deep Dome Lake.

I really paired down these entries, only selecting a few from the year to share—some a single paragraph from three pages of a day's journaling.

I'm including an audio message at the end—sharing some parts left out, what stood out to me, and weaving connections to the Root Living story—for those interested in a more behind-the-scenes view.

Root Living Journals: Driving West to Utah

Hello dear one,

Last week 2019-Rebecca left Steamboat Springs, after the phone interview at Red Rocks. (Here is part 1 and part 2 of these journals, if you're newly joining).

This week she continues towards Hurricane, UT. If you only have space for one entry, read Oct. 22.

Root Living Journals: Driving West to Steamboat (Fall 2019)

Hello dear one,

This second section of entries begins with a brief vocal message from me (« Click link and tap play.), sharing what arose as I compiled this journaling which I hadn't looked at in nearly 7 years.

After you've listened, here's some context for this season, the drive out west to Colorado:

- If you haven't read Part 1, start there.

- Elereen is my SUV, purchased that August.

Root Living Journals: Summer 2019

Hello dear one,

To begin sharing the Root Living Journals, here are a smattering of entries from my personal journal the summer after my dear friend Cathleen died (in February). They come from the hands of a Rebecca who is 30 years old, and who had spent April and May hiking the Arizona Trail (“the walk/AZT”). [Those months are in separate journals though, perhaps I can dig them out for a later share.]

She is now living with her parents, another Inbetween season — tutoring Spanish to young kids twice a week, otherwise no job, community, etc - and with Grief. She was reading a book about Shadow Work that summer, often playing with the idea of taking on the qualities we deem undesirable in others.

I'll change a few names, but otherwise, you are peeking into actual journals. [I could say so much in response, but will only share: With my current somatic lens, it's fascinating/surprising to see how much I was describing as “Ego.” Love you, younger Rebecca!]

On Transformation

Hello dear one,

As a layer and lens of introduction, I'm sharing today a freewrite from March of 2025. We were in relation with Whales that month in the Loam, and the prompt was: What records do you in particular keep? What are you responsible for and wanting to pass on?

As you read what my hand wrote below, I invite you into your body:

Can you feel yourself breathing, without changing it?

As you read, intend to notice: are there any phrases where your body constricts? Or where tingles of resonance are felt? Where breath deepens or pauses?
