Why Amazing Race's 4 teams didn't return, and why Adam Ruins Everything was cancelled. Plus: Iron Chef, The Mole, a giveaway, and more

Dear newsletter friends,

Happy Friday, and I do hope it’s a happy Friday for you. In a few minutes, I’m plastering on a mask to go get my hair cut, which makes it a very exciting day for me. It’s the little things!

This week, I answered questions about the return of Fixer Upper and passed along a reader’s request for help finding a VH1 show called Last Model Standing. Anyone remember it?

If you’re looking for something to watch this weekend:

  • 3 global Real Housewives franchises, and 9 other reality shows, are being added to Discovery+

  • Here are this week’s reality TV premieres and documentaries airing on TV

Amazing Race

I recapped this week’s episode:

  • The race restarted in Switzerland with two returning teams and ‘a safe plan’

and I wrote about:

  • why the four teams didn’t return

  • and the mysterious unaired task.

Reality show news

Tru Tv Wave GIF by truTV’s Adam Ruins Everything
  • Why Adam Ruins Everything was cancelled

  • Netflix is reviving Iron Chef, in addition to its revival of The Mole

  • Pooch Perfect, the awful ABC dog grooming reality competition, was cancelled, and ABC will also not be making more Who Wants to be a Millionaire any time soon.

More news

  • André Leon Talley, influential fashion journalist and judge on America’s Next Top Model, died at age 73

  • Netflix only paid Navarro College $30,000 to film Cheer there. Sportico published the rights agreement, and it’s a fascinating read.

  • Cops was cancelled and then brought back by Fox News, and now “police departments are making their own Cops videos counteracting police brutality depicted on social media,” as Buzzfeed reports. Idea: How about counteracting police brutality by not brutalizing people?

🎁 A giveaway

From time to time I receive unsolicited swag items in the mail from TV networks, and usually donate them to charity, or sometimes give them to friends.

At the end of the year, I received this photo book, and decided to offer it to you, my newsletter friends!

I have one copy to give away, and if you’d like to win this book, simply comment on this newsletter with your favorite reality show from the 21st century (well, so far!).

I’ll choose a winner at random on Tuesday, send that person an e-mail to get your mailing address, and then mail the book. Because of mailing costs, I can only send to people in the U.S., alas!

The fine print stuff: Age 18+ only, no purchase necessary, you’re responsible for any taxes, one entry per person, entries close Monday at 11:59 p.m. ET.

🤩 I recommend

  • This show, which debuts its second season on Thursday

  • This highly effective show, which was cancelled but is streaming on HBO Max

  • This fake trailer for “The Audience,” a reality show that’s only audience reaction shots.

That’s everything I have for you this week. Enjoy your weekend!

best,
Andy

🌄 This is Reality in Focus issue 274, first sent Jan. 21, 2022, and it would not have had the energy to return to run any race this fall.
