The joy of Making Fun, SYTYCD's new judges, The Quest's return, and a new reality TV news feature

Dear newsletter friends,

Happy Friday! I’ve been fortunate to be writing about what I love—reality TV—for almost 23 years now: first recapping The Real World Hawaii in 1999, and then starting reality blurred a year later.

A lot has changed since then, as I discuss in the intro here.

The short version is I’m bringing back something I used to primarily do: linking to reality TV news stories, with a little snark! Throughout the month, I’ll update the same story with news I think is worth highlighting.

Check it out here. Recently added: Todrick Hall’s apology tour, Shahs of Sunset’s end, and the end of a long-running cable reality show.

In other news—i.e. things that I felt compelled to write more about than a sentence or two—we have:

  • So You Think You Can Dance announcing its three new judges, and Cat Deeley returning as host

  • ABC cancelling three game shows and two other reality shows

  • The Quest’s season 2 trailer, which looks amazing

A recap and a review

  • I recapped Survivor 42’s fifth episode, which made history as it lead us into next week’s merge, which I have some thoughts about!

  • I reviewed Making Fun on Netflix, which, yes, is a whole lot of fun—and so much better than other reality shows about making impractical things

🤩 I recommend

  • This show on Netflix, which is just so much fun

  • This show; its fifth season was just added to Discovery+ this week

  • Season one of this show, which you can watch on Amazon before season two arrives

That’s everything I’ve written about and watched this week. Have a terrific weekend!

best,
Andy
