The Way I Heard It Was...

This is a lightly-edited version of the last chapter of the latest book:

I like the backstory for this piece. I was pre-Pandemic in Costa Rica with the family. They were giving me space each day to finish the book. Up in the morning, walk over the breakfast, get coffee, and return to our room. Build out the writing set-up and furiously bang on the keyboard for a couple of hours whilst staring at the Pacific ocean.

The entire book is in my head at this point in the writing process. The narrative flow is a literal abstract shape in my head. Walking back from dinner one night thinking I was mostly done the above chapter appeared out of nowhere. Yes, the semi-mythical tale of how to build a team to do an impossible thing. The final chapter. Perfect.

Most of the writing process is not worth writing about. It’s the hard part of any job. Boring and tactical – necessary – but otherwise not noteworthy. Occasionally, frustratingly unpredictably, the work just appears.

Have a great weekend.
