Happy November!
As the holiday season approaches, we're excited to share some important updates and milestones with you.
Celebrating R&R Law's First Anniversary
One year ago, Rebecca Godinho and Rema Aljajeh founded R&R Law LLP, embarking on an incredible journey. This past year has been extraordinary, filled with countless success stories as we've guided individuals and companies through their Canadian immigration journeys. We're deeply grateful for our clients' trust and inspired by their courage and determination.
R&R Law LLP stands as a testament to the power of diversity, compassion, and legal expertise combined. We look forward to many more years of making dreams come true and breaking down barriers for those seeking new opportunities in Canada.
Changes to LMIA and Wage Thresholds
Starting November 8, 2024, significant changes will affect employers:
The wage threshold for high-wage or low-wage streams will increase by 20%
Employers can no longer use attestations from lawyers and chartered professional accountants to prove business legitimacy
Low-wage LMIA applications face new restrictions, including:
No processing in areas with 6%+ unemployment
Reduced caps on low-wage positions in certain sectors
Shortened employment duration for low-wage positions
PGWP Eligibility Changes
New language proficiency requirements and field of study restrictions have been implemented for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) applicants. These changes vary based on when you apply for your study permit and the type of program you're pursuing.
Express Entry Challenges
The Express Entry system has become increasingly competitive, with recent draws requiring very high scores. This trend may potentially impact Canada's ability to attract skilled workers. The latest CEC draw required a minimum score of 547, which is exceptionally high.
End of Student Direct Stream and Nigeria Student Express
As of November 8, 2024, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) and Nigeria Student Express (NSE) initiatives have ended. All prospective students are now invited to apply through the regular study permit stream.
New Regulations for International Students
Effective immediately, new regulations for the International Student Program include:
Eligible students can now work up to 24 hours per week off campus during the academic term
Students must obtain approval for a new study permit before changing learning institutions
These changes aim to ensure the sustainability of the International Student Program and protect students from potential abuse within the system.
As we navigate these significant changes in the immigration landscape, R&R Law LLP remains committed to providing expert guidance and support. We're here to help you understand and adapt to these new regulations, ensuring your immigration journey is as smooth as possible.
Stay informed, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about how these changes might affect you or your organization. Here's to a successful and transformative year ahead in Canadian immigration!
Regards,
Rema and Rebecca
