Monthly Newsletter- June 2025

June has brought with it a series of impactful developments in Canadian immigration, as well as exciting opportunities to connect, learn, and grow together. From streamlined work permit processes to legislative reform and policy innovations, here’s what you need to know this month:
IRCC Simplifies IEC Work Permit Renewals for Residents in Canada
In a major policy shift, IRCC has removed the requirement for International Experience Canada (IEC) participants to leave and re-enter Canada to obtain a new work permit. As of May 6, 2025, eligible IEC applicants can now have their permits mailed directly to their Canadian address.
Key Eligibility Criteria:
Must be in Canada with a valid IEC work permit.
Must have a valid Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction.
Must apply before the POE letter expires and maintain legal status throughout the process.
This new policy is in effect until December 1, 2025, and helps eliminate the need for flagpoling or international travel for renewal. A welcome change for many young workers and employers relying on them!
Proposed Legislation Expands Citizenship by Descent
Bill C-3, introduced by Minister Marc Miller, aims to extend Canadian citizenship beyond the first generation born abroad. If passed, it will:
Automatically restore citizenship to those affected by outdated provisions or the first-generation limit.
Establish a new framework for granting citizenship based on a Canadian parent’s substantial connection to Canada.
This proposal is a step toward a more inclusive, fair approach to citizenship.
