Monthly Newsletter - June 2024

Happy June, everyone!
As we gear up for an influx of applications expected due to the recent changes in Canadian immigration, we're also excited to enjoy the summer sunshine! Let's dive into this month's highlights:
French Tech Toronto Summit at Casa Loma
Two weeks ago, our team attended the French Tech Toronto Summit at the beautiful Casa Loma, hosted by La French Tech Toronto. It was a fantastic evening filled with networking, engaging panels, and insightful tracks on AI: 'Unlocking AI's Potential: Industry Insights & Applications' and 'Guardians of Privacy: Navigating the AI Era Safely'. A big thank you to the organizers and Casa Loma for an unforgettable experience!
Express Entry: Updated Proof of Funds
IRCC updated the amount of money required for settlement in Canada under the Express Entry system. These figures are adjusted annually based on 50% of the low-income cut-off totals. To maintain eligibility, you should have updated your settlement fund numbers in your Express Entry profile by June 2, 2024. Remember, updating your profile won’t affect your submission date or rank in case of a tie-breaker situation.
Enhanced Caregiver Pilots Announced
On June 3, 2024, the Honourable Marc Miller announced new enhanced caregiver pilot programs as the Home Child Care Provider and Home Support Worker Pilots conclude. These new programs will grant permanent residence to home care workers upon arrival and allow them to work with organizations providing temporary or part-time care. Key criteria for eligibility include:
· Minimum level 4 in Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB)
· Canadian high school diploma or equivalent
· Recent and relevant work experience
· Full-time home care job offer
More details will be released soon, outlining full eligibility criteria and application procedures.
Increase in Temporary Special Measures for Gaza
On May 27, 2024, Minister Miller announced an increase in the number of temporary resident visa applications accepted under the special measures for Palestinian extended family in Gaza, raising the cap from 1,000 to 5,000. Although movement out of Gaza is currently restricted, this increase ensures readiness to help more people as the situation evolves. Canada continues to work with local authorities in Israel and Egypt to facilitate the exit of those eligible.
New Legislation for Citizenship by Descent
On May 23, 2024, the Government of Canada introduced Bill C-71, addressing the second generation cut-off for citizenship by descent. Following a December 2023 ruling deeming the first-generation limit unconstitutional, Bill C-71 proposes:
· Automatic Remedy: Granting citizenship to those who lost it due to the first-generation limit.
· New Framework: Allowing citizenship transmission beyond the first generation if a substantial connection to Canada is demonstrated, requiring a cumulative physical presence in Canada of 1,095 days before the child's birth or adoption.
This bill aims to rectify past injustices and ensure fair access to Canadian citizenship.
Stay tuned for more updates and enjoy the summer!
Regards,
Rema and Rebecca
