Monthly Newsletter - January 2026

Happy January!
As we welcome 2026 with very snowy weather, we’re excited to share some key updates from the world of Canadian immigration. From extended temporary residence options to promising Express Entry trends and important citizenship changes, here’s what you need to know as we kick off the new year.
Looking Ahead in 2026
At R&R Law LLP, we remain committed to helping individuals and businesses navigate the complexities of Canadian immigration. A new year brings new challenges—and new opportunities—and our team is here to guide you every step of the way.
Supporting Ukrainian Family Reunification
Canada has extended temporary residence options for applicants under the Ukrainian family reunification pathway who are awaiting a decision on their permanent residence applications.
Until March 31, 2027, eligible applicants in Canada may apply for:
A new or extended open work permit
A new study permit
An extension or restoration of temporary resident status
Express Entry: CEC Cut-Off Drops to 509
After remaining in the 533–534 range from August to November 2025, CEC Express Entry cut-off scores dropped to 509 on January 1, 2026—the lowest since August 2024.
This decrease has allowed many candidates with lower CRS scores to receive Invitations to Apply, signaling increased opportunities for Canadian Experience Class applicants.
Bill C-3 Now in Effect
As of December 15, 2025, Bill C-3 is officially in force.
Individuals previously excluded due to the first-generation limit may now be Canadian citizens and can apply for proof of citizenship.
Canadian parents born or adopted abroad can pass on citizenship to children born or adopted outside Canada if they meet physical presence requirements.
Applications already submitted will be processed under the new rules.
As Canadian immigration policies continue to evolve, staying informed is key. At R&R Law LLP, we are dedicated to guiding individuals and businesses through every stage of the immigration process. Whether you’re planning a move, applying for citizenship, or exploring work and study opportunities, our team is here to provide clarity and support in 2026 and beyond.
Regards,
Rema and Rebecca
