Express Entry Updates

Express Entry trends continue to show high scores, with the last general draw cutoff at 535. However, for category-based draws, scores vary, and unfortunately, the agricultural occupations draw saw an increased cutoff score of 437 in the latest draw.

Francophone Immigration Initiative

On February 9, 2024, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the commencement of 2024 Express Entry rounds. Canada is actively inviting prospective candidates with category-specific work experience or strong French language proficiency to apply for permanent residence, aiming to strengthen national identity, grow the economy, and address labor shortages.

The new policy on Francophone Immigration and its implementation plan highlights the government's commitment to supporting the economic vitality of Francophone communities outside Quebec. This initiative includes a special focus on candidates with a strong French language proficiency in Express Entry.

Changes to International Study Permits

On February 5, 2024, the Canadian government provided further information to clarify the recent reforms to the International Student Program. Key changes include:

  • Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL): Most new post-secondary international students must provide a PAL from a province or territory with their study permit application.

  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): Graduates of master’s degree programs less than 2 years in length can now apply for a 3-year PGWP as of February 15, 2024.

  • PGWP Eligibility for Public-Private Partnership College Programs: Changes have been made to restrict PGWPs for institutions with concerns about program quality and student services.

  • Changes to Open Work Permit Eligibility for Spouses: Eligibility for open work permits for the spouses and common-law partners of international students will be updated, limited to graduate and professional degree–granting programs.

We hope you find these updates valuable. As always, feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance.

Regards,

Rema and Rebecca
