The Idea
We often equate ease with good. In communication, this instinct pushes us to avoid difficult conversations, to soften truths, or to simply not speak up when something is bothering us. This avoidance feels like a release in the moment, a smoothing over of potential friction. However, this isn't eliminating friction; it's merely postponing and amplifying it. The 'unsaid' doesn't disappear; it accumulates, transforming into a subtle but persistent drag on relationships and our own peace of mind. Consider the manager who avoids giving direct feedback, leading to a team member's continued underperformance and eventual frustration for everyone. Or the partner who sidesteps a minor grievance, only for it to resurface weeks later as a disproportionate outburst. The initial, small friction of a direct conversation is replaced by the much heavier, more damaging resistance of resentment or misunderstanding. The cost of ease, in this case, is the erosion of trust and the burden of unaddressed issues.
One Question
What truth, if spoken with courage and care today, would prevent a greater resistance from building tomorrow?
Today's Action
- Identify one situation where you're holding back a necessary truth or feeling. It doesn't have to be a confrontation, just an honest share.
- Draft a single, clear sentence or two that expresses it directly, but kindly. Focus on 'I' statements.
- Decide on a time and place to communicate this in the next 12 hours. The goal isn't immediate resolution, but honest articulation.
Go Deeper
The truly easy path is often the one that embraces discomfort early. The momentary friction of an honest conversation is a small price for the long-term fluidity of genuine connection. What we resist now, we carry later.
