R&M Studio Visit — 07.31.25

07.31.25

Hi — long time no newsletter!

It’s been a busy few months since our studio launch party. We’ve packed and shipped many a hat across the world (still a few left in case you’re interested!), travelled to Mexico, and otherwise been enjoying summer in the city. We also went to the annual Typographics festival, which Ryan wrote about for Fontstand. You can read about it here.

Some of our highlights from our trip to CDMX & Oaxaca. Too many to list but here’s four:

Museo Anahuacalli — designed and founded by Diego Rivera. Incredible stonework and heavy, dark ambiance, with a collection of pre-Hispanic pieces.

Casa Gilardi — the last project of the Mexican architect Luis Barragán. A private home that you can schedule a visit to see the beautiful use of color, space, and light.

Casa Pochote — A fourth-generation textile workshop. We got to learn about different natural dying and weaving processes.

Biblioteca Vasconcelos — designed by the Mexican architects Alberto Kalach and Juan Palomar. A dizzying library with floating shelves that seem weightless and infinite.

In perfect timing for the summer season, Kato Sake Works released a new product — a cup of sake, or “Kappu”! We were excited to translate the label design to this new form factor. Rather than recreating a miniature version of the bottle labels, we wanted to celebrate the can itself, and create a transparent label that felt different than the rest of their lineup.

In the end, we broke out of our usual 3x3 grid and went for a taller arrangement of the letterforms, to match the proportions of the can. We also relegated the full logo lockup to the side of the can, knowing that our custom typeface, Kato Mono, could do the work of brand recognition.
