Donations Needed to Restore Willey Clocktower

a photo of a a clocktower

The Willey Clocktower is one of the oldest, most recognizable Question Mark man-made features in our town and has, over the last forty years, fallen into an embarrassing state of disrepair. Sometimes I cross the street when walking down Main in order to avoid having to look at the graffiti that now covers its once-beautiful facade.

First constructed by town founder Reginald Willey in 1884, the 82-foot clocktower was once a symbol of progress and industry featuring four, fully-illuminated clock faces. After a very public falling-out between Willey heirs Royce and Reuben Willey in 1979, each clock face stopped working and the clocktower slowly became a hang-out for hooligans and ner-do-wells.

As our town continues to face adversity and uncertainty, we at the Question Mark Historical Society believe restoring this beloved icon will help all of us honor our rich past while also imagining a bright, hopeful future. As a first step to restoring this beautiful icon of the town, we are happy to announce the launch of the Willey Clocktower website, which I think captures the fascinating history of the clocktower and of Question Mark itself.

For more information on how you can donate, please stop by the Question Mark Historical Society at 1901 First Street. Also, I am still looking for participants for our Kite-Fighting Club for the upcoming season.

The entire town is invited to our upcoming commitment ceremony

a committment ceremony invitation, two women standing in a sunny field, hugging, the words 'val and beth April 27, 2024' below

Valerie Evans and Beth Galinski invite you to celebrate the commitment of their love on Saturday, April 27th, at 2pm at The Void, or what was previously known as the Void and is now just a beautiful field.

Refreshments and dancing will follow the ceremony. In lieu of gifts, please consider a donation to a local CPR foundation of your choice, as it was CPR which was responsible for bringing the two of us together.

As Albert Camus, one of Val’s favorite writers once wrote: “I recognize only one duty, and that is to love.”

Children injured at Spring Flower Show

Whoever from the University of Ohio Experimental Crop Station thought it was a good idea to bring several grotesque-looking plant specimens to a public flower show has no idea about the nature of beauty or the rules of decorum. I have no idea what goes on in scientific circles but what occurred today was deeply disturbing and completely unacceptable.

Now that the Voids have disappeared, this community had better take a long look at itself and decide how it plans to generate income moving forward. I had thought a flower show would have been a pretty low-risk endeavor but once again this town has proven me wrong.

Also, the parents of Terry Quinn and Rudy McClain have my deepest apologies. This is not an admission of guilt on the town’s behalf and also I assume no personal responsibility. But, in my opinion, this was an unfortunate incident that could have easily been avoided and scientists or not, you should all be deeply ashamed.

Community Notes

4-8-24

Today, on Monday, April 8th, 2024, our skies will be host to a total solar eclipse. Even though it may seem like it, the world is not ending. Not now anyway. This historical event will draw visitors to the Question Mark area. In that regard, we want to offer these suggestions so that we can make this an enjoyable experience for everybody.

The moon will pass over the sun in Ohio from 11:30am to 1:50pm.

Some tips for optimal viewing:

  • Do not stare directly at the sun. Blinking rapidly still counts as staring.

  • Do not stop eating, drinking, or breathing during this time. Please don’t forget to breathe.

  • When in your vehicle, expect sudden stops by other drivers. Please do not drive while wearing solar eclipse glasses.

  • Be aware of any cult-like activity and please stay away.

  • Avoid any portals, disappearing wells, or abruptions in Time that may open.

  • The eclipse will happen during the beginning of wildflower season in the Question Mark woods. Avoid parking in areas that could damage wildflower growth.

  • Enjoy this one of a kind, celestial occurrence and ponder the ephemeral nature of your existence and all living things.
