🥣 Upcoming Soup 🥣

🤝 This Month’s Collaboration 🤝

To acquire funds to run the project, our first partnership is with yours truly - ✨Queer Community Soup (QCS)! ✨

QCS is organized on lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ territories (Victoria, BC). Our mission is to nourish our queer and trans community through accessible, nutritious meals while building collective care and solidarity. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Through soup-based community events, we create opportunities to gather, connect, and support one another. We raise funds for grassroots projects in our city, because care, joy, and liberation grow stronger when they are shared.

Each month we will put the spotlight on a local organization or mutual aid group who does work in our communities, and any excess donations above the cost of food will go toward a specific program or cause of their choice.

Funds raised at the September Queer Community Soup will go directly toward getting us set up with the resources to continue this work into the next year.

At the moment, we will only be collecting 💸 CASH 💸 donations; nobody will be turned away for lack of funds, but those who can afford to donate are encouraged to do so.

No registration required! Come on out to Oaklands Community Center on September 12 at 5pm, bring a friend or two, be gay, and eat soup!🍲

The image shows two people standing behind a counter with three trays of food in front of them. One of the people behind the counter is wearing a N95 mask. Both people are wearing protective gloves. They are getting ready to serve a person standing in front of the counter with their back towards the camera. The food trays include broccoli, fries, and soup.
    Serving up the goods! 🤤

P.S - Dessert is community potluck style so if you want an after soup goodie, please bring enough to share! (with an ingredient list too!) 🎂 🥧

🌈🥄 A “Spoonful” of 2SLGBTQIA+ History 🥄🌈

And what would a queer and trans newsletter be without a little learning?

DID YOU KNOW…

Following the Stonewall Riots as well as the decriminalization of homosexuality in 1969, the “We Demand” Rally in 1971 marked a pivotal moment in 2SLBGTQIA+ activism in so-called Canada.

Storming Parliament Hill in numbers, queer folks protested against ongoing discrimination, police violence, and exploitation. Accompanied by a letter with 10 demands, advocates came together and used their voices to fight for equal rights and opportunity as well as the freedom to love and be who we are without fear.

The “We Demand” Rally is said to have inspired the following actions of the 1973 Pride Protests in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg.

NOW THAT YOU KNOW..

A few questions to consider (maybe over a delicious bowl of soup in the company of beautiful, funny, new and old pals at a cool upcoming community event on September 12th 🤷)

  1. Were you around during the time of this event? Did you participate? If so, what was that experience like?

  2. How can learning about past queer and trans activism shape our actions today?

  3. If you could go back in time and talk to these activists, what would you say?

Alright folks, that’s it that’s all for this month’s newsletter. We will see you on September 12th at Oaklands Community Centre! Don’t forget to bring your cash and pals 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 See you soooooooooon!

The image shows a large group of people seated and standing around various large tables with green table cloths. Most people are facing the camera and smiling.
